SAF 2005 WORKING GROUP ANNUAL REPORT
E2 Land Use Planning Organization and Management Eric Cox, Chair (2005-2006)
Report your Working Groups accomplishments and activities, your observations on the effectiveness of the SAF Science Program, your recommendations for improvement, and your plans for the next two calendar years in the appropriate boxes below. Activities should be reported in the box for the strategic outcome that best describes the purpose of the activity. Recommendations will be addressed by the Forest Science and Technology Board and, when appropriate, reported to the SAF Council for their action.

1. A Strong, ForwardThinking Organization
Summary of Activity
Strategic Outcome #1: A Strong, Forward-Thinking Organization SAF is recognized by all technical and research foresters as their primary professional Society that meets their needs for service, networking, and professional growth.
Developed a technical session for the Ft. Worth national convention that focused on planning tools for private landowners. We saw this as an area of service and opportunity for professional growth for foresters and managers in the south.
2. Enhanced Service to Landowners and Employers
Strategic Outcome #2: Enhanced Service to Landowners and Employers SAF is an organization that promotes sound scientific and experiential knowledge to meet landowner and employer objectives.
3. Enhanced Service to Society at Large
The group maintains a web site that is devoted to disseminating information to landowners regarding upcoming events (conferences) on land use planning organization and management. As far as the WG is concerned, we will provide information regarding any conference that concerns land use planning organization and management. Strategic Outcome #3: Enhanced Service to Society at Large SAF will be broadly recognized as the primary organization that fosters sound scientific and experiential forestry knowledge to balance societys current and emerging needs and values ranging from commodities to wilderness and protection of the environment.
4. Effective Engagement in Forest Policy
Strategic Outcome #4: Effective Engagement in Forest Policy SAF will be recognized by decision-makers and in policy development as the leader in providing credible and reliable forestry information.
5. Enhanced Professional Education, Performance, Leadership and Capability
Strategic Outcome #5: Enhanced Professional Education, Performance, and Leadership Capability SAF is recognized for having high professional forestry standards in service to society.
6. Development and Sound Stewardship of SAFs Resources
Strategic Outcome #6: Development and Sound Stewardship of SAFs Resources SAF at all levels is recognized for conserving and enhancing its human, financial, and physical resources.
Observations
As Pete Bettinger noted in an e-mail to Peter Ince on 1/19/05, there is an evident scientific need to continue the E2 Working Group. As a topical area, "land use planning" is increasingly important. The topics of "organization and management" of forestry organizations are less interesting, and thus support for the entire package may be difficult to find within the SAF. We don't see any other Working Group addressing the practical issues facing forestry organizations. The Forest Service, for example, is in the process of revising its forest plans, State agencies in the West are developing complex plans for their forests, the Bureau of Land Management is interested in landscape planning methods, and numerous companies are concerned about spatial harvest scheduling and the impact of plans on habitat development.
