of University California, Irvine MAE130B Design Project Winter Quarter, 2009 You may have seen the spectacular show of the dancing fountain in front of the casino hotel Bellagio in Las Vegas. While this fantastic music fountain show has entertained millions of tourists each year, it has also escalated the competition among the casino industry in this desert kingdom. The owner of another casino Mega Award Excite (MAE) located in 130B of the Strip Street has vowed to attract the tourists back to his hotel by building a more fascinating fountain show in front of his casino. The MAE owner has a preliminary idea on the fountain layout as illustrated in the following diagrams. Six pipes, each having diameter 30cm, are connected to a central pump. The other ends of the pipes are open to the pond. The pipes are equally spaced in the angular direction. Along each pipe, 10 holes are drilled with equal interval of 5m from the pump. It is assumed that the pump generates a pressure head P0/ g = 100 m and a flow velocity V0 = 50 m/s. 1st 5m 60 P 10 holes 5m P0 V0 5m 2nd 10th dn=? D=30 cm To pond 10 holes Top view of the fountain layout. Side view of a pipe branch. By mouth of power, the MAE owner has come to you, my dear for friend, a detailed analysis and design for his fountain idea. Now let us consider three cases, (1) All the holes have same diameter of your choice, i.e., dn = d for n = 1 to10, please make a plot of water jet height H and jet volume flow rate Q as a function of hole#, i.e., H=H(n) and Q=Q(n). (2) As you can see, the volume flow rate is not same for the 10 holes because of head loss. So let us try to make the hole size vary in a linear fashion, i.e., dn = d + (n-1) for n = 1 to10. Then make a plot of H=H(n) and Q=Q(n) again for various . Can you find a -value that will make the jet volume flow rate the same for all holes? (3) If the volume flow rate is still not the same, can you design the hole sizes so that the fountain jet flow rate will be the same? The holes shall be large enough to make a great fountain show. You can form a team (up to 4 people) to work on this project. Each team shall submit one report and all team members will receive the same score. The final report should be typed and organized into sections such as Problem Statement, Engineering Analysis, Design Results, Conclusions and Discussions, etc. The design project is 20% of the final score and is due at the same time as the last homework.
