(2 pts) The DRG is located dorsally near the root of cranial nerve IX, and the VRG extends in the ventral brain stem from the spinal cord to the ponsmedulla junction. The VRG is a rhythm generating and integrative center. It does this by stimulating and relaxing the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles. The DRG integrates input from peripheral stretch and chemoreceptors and communicates this information to the VRG.
