towards feelings of love in public. He is weary of lovers and the strong effects love has over an individual. Troilus expresses this disdain in his speech to his other knights, she slepeth softe / For love of the whan thow turnest ofte! (Book 1, lns195-196). He goes on to comment on lovers foolish devotion and the silliness and blindness of love. Troilus sounds as if his words are elevated in a manner that he feels he is not only the commander of his troops, but of trivial manners of love. He is elevated to the point that he seems to understand and mock the world around him. After the God of Love strikes him with an arrow of love, Troilus is vulnerable to the powers of love and Therwith his herte gan to sprede and rise / And softe sighed, lest men myghte hym here (Book 1, lns 278-279). Troilus lets out a soft sigh so his men would not hear him and know he has fallen to loves powers. Troilus mocks the rest of his men and conceals his feelings by providing them with another speech on the trivial nature of love. Al feyneth he in lust that he sojorneth / And al his chere and speche also he borneth (Book 1, lns 326-327). He put on a smile and delivered a speech saying that a lovers devotion to the woman they love is only returned with a scolding and is all in vain. Later he dismisses his men, and must retreat to his room to confront new his situation of falling in love with Criseyde. When he is alone, he is extremely reflective about his situation, and Thus took he purpos
loves craft to suwe / And thoughte he wolde werken pryvely / First to hidden his desir in muwe / From every wight yborn al outrely (Book 1, lns 379-382). So, he decided to follow the art of love, but also to hide his love from every living creature as well. With this new plan in order, he decides to write a song to help overcome his woe and also to fully give himself to the love of Criseyde. 2. In Troiluss new state of love, all of his dreads and his reservations about war
leave him because his mind is completely occupied in love and Criseyde. He is only concerned with winning Criseydes love and compassion and being her man for life. Alle other dredes weren from him fledde, / Both of thassege and his savacioun / Nyn him desir noon other fownes bredde (Book 1, lns 463-465). The pains of love affected Troilus so much that they showed in his face and again he tries to cover it up from his men, And seyde he hadde a fevere and ferde amys (Book 1, ln. 491). He is so caught up in his love that it affects him physically and he still must dissemble from his men. 3. Chaucers reference to another bestial tale and the duty of a horse to do its work is
similar to Troiluss view that he must still command and not be swayed by love (corn for the horse). The horse being struck by the lashing is similar to Troilus being struck by Loves arrow.
