Art AT-13: and the Environment Journal Assignments: Peer Review & Reading/Discussion Questions Dr. Gliem Due Date: Tuesday, August 14 Peer Review The goals of the peer review are 1) to help improve your classmate's paper by pointing out strengths and weaknesses that may not be apparent to the author, and 2) to help improve your editing skills. INSTRUCTIONS: Read the paper assignment to yourself twice, once to get an overview of the paper, and a second time to provide constructive criticism for the author to use when revising his/her paper. Bring two (2) copies of your review, one for the author and one to turn into the professor. You will be graded on the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of your response. In a typewritten paper (between 1 to 2 pages, more if needed), answer each of the questions below: 1. What is the name of the author of your paper? ORGANIZATION 2. Are the basic sections (intro, thesis, conclusion, etc.) adequate? If not, what is missing? 3. Is the thesis in the first paragraph? Does it make an argument? Can you offer suggestions for improvement? 4. Does each paragraph address one issue, and relate back to the main thesis? Explain. Point out problem paragraphs. 5. Is the material ordered in a way that is logical, clear, and easy to follow? If not, where does the paper not sense? make GRAMMAR AND STYLE 6. Are there any grammatical or spelling problems? Circle words that are spelled incorrectly. Underline sentences that are grammatically suspect. 7. Is the writer's writing style clear? Are the paragraphs and sentences cohesive? 8. Is the paper formatted according to the directions on the assignment? CONTENT 9. Does the writer adequately summarize and discuss the topic? Explain. 10. Does the writer make some contribution of thought to the paper, or is it merely descriptive? Explain. Reading Assignment Read Chapter 2 in Nash, Wilderness & The American Mind. Write a one-paragraph summary of the chapter and develop two (2) questions for discussion with written answers to each of the questions. Tips for developing effective discussion questions: Make sure your questions are easy to hear. Though they may look good written on paper, they may not be easy to follow when read out loud. Don t ask needle-in-the-haystack questions; instead, look for broad issues and ideas. Develop questions that are challenging, thought-provoking, hypothetical, &/or involve INFORMED opinions. Avoid asking questions that merely require the student find factual information from the text. Don t ask questions that only need a yes or no answer.
