2454: HTM Careers in Tourism WTTC Job Forecast Statistics The Importance of Internships Careers in Tourism Some Additional Ideas The Great Debate WTTC Job Forecast Statistics Tourism contributes to: GDP Capital Investment Employment Foreign exchange Export earnings But it s REAL punch is in its job-creating capacity! 8.3% of total workforce! 221.5 million people employed in the tourism industry in 2005, and it continues to grow! Do I really need to have an internship? Ummm, lemme think .YEAH! Acquire valuable hand-on experience Learn practical skills Develop professionalism Interact with the business community Understand the field! Careers in Tourism: Some additional ideas Atypical careers in tourism can go beyond what you might think! Examples (with a little help from my friends) include: Larry Friedman: Nevada Commission on Tourism, Director of Rural Tourism Development Works with small communities interested in developing tourism Keith National Howard: Tour Foundation Oversees the awarding of scholarships and grants to students and scholars Kelly Repass: Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau Conducts research for the Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau Careers in Tourism: Some additional ideas (cont d.) Or Dr.M. and others like her: tourism educators! Some people can become instructors of tourism with a Master s Degree and lots of experience If you are interested in doing research and working in communities, a Ph.D. is a good idea! Each year there are many more positions in tourism education available in the U.S. Debate Careers in Tourism are a waste of time. There aren t very many good jobs, and the service segment of the economy is going nowhere vs. There are more jobs, and a greater variety of jobs, in tourism than any other industry; I can t wait to get involved! On your own, come up with points for both sides of this argument (use the book, of course, and your own ideas).
