2:15 A-3 IMPLEMENTATION OF A REMOTE MONITORING SYSTEM TO AID IN THE PREVENTION OF SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME (SIDS) *Kimberly Gold. Advisor: Dr. Mohammad Bodruzzaman, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is prevalent throughout society and no cause has been determined to date. Normally infants cry or move to indicate a lack of oxygen; however, those with SIDS give no indication of their inability to breathe. SIDS is the number one cause of death in infants' ages one month to one year, which translates to approximately 2,500 deaths per year in the United States alone. In an to effort reduce the mortality rate due to SIDS, it is necessary to design and implement a remote monitoring system to alert proximal caregivers, parents remotely and physicians of abnormalities as well as store pertinent patient information. A graphical user interface was designed utilizing Visual Basic 6.0 to input pertinent patient information and display simulated Electrocardiogram signals and respiratory rate signals. A visual Alarm is activated when either signal exceeds or falls beneath. This software may be used in conjunction with additional hardware to remotely monitor infants to aid in the prevention of SIDS.
