Organic CH311-01 Chemistry I Fall 2002 Syllabus Instructor: Prof. Dell Jensen, Science 408, 794-3472, CHJENSEN@augustana.edu Office Hours: MWF 10-11am, T 1:30-2:30 or by appointment Texts: Organic Chemistry, Francis A. Carey, 5th ed. McGraw-Hill, 2002 The Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual, James W. Zubrick, Fourth Edition, J. Wiley and Sons Organic Chemistry Laboratory Manual, C. Davis and R. Narske, Augustana College. Laboratory Notebook purchased from chemistry office. About the Course: This course is the first of a three term sequence in organic chemistry. Organic chemistry is the study of hydrocarbons and their derivatives, which will include nomenclature, structure, and reactivity of organic compounds. The lecture is coupled to laboratory component which will provide a hands-on experience in the manipulation of organic compounds. This course can prepare you for future courses such as biochemistry and for future graduate admissions exams, but only if you take responsibility for this material. Lecture: This is a course in organic chemistry and the information in this course is your responsibility, which includes the textbook, lectures, study sheets and assigned discussion materials. The recommended problems are also your responsibility. These problems are not graded but they are for your benefit and will help you to prepare for exams. Attendance is critical for both the lecture and discussion material, but there will be quizzes given throughout the term. (No make-ups will be given.) Laboratory: Laboratory assignments must be complete on your assigned day unless PRIOR arrangements have been made with your laboratory instructor AND the other instructor. Due to the large number of organic chemistry students there will be no makeup days and little to no room in other laboratory sections. Arrangements to make-up labs for excused Augustana College-related activity MUST be made at the beginning of the term You will follow the rules that are given to you about the proper behavior in the laboratory. These will be discussed and are in your laboratory textbook under the safety section. They also appear on the safety information sheet you will get with your laboratory equipment sheet. KNOW THESE SAFETY RULES. THIS IS THE ONLY WRITTEN WARNING YOU WILL RECEIVE ABOUT SAFETY AND WEARING SAFETY GOGGLES. SAFETY GOGGLES MUST BE WARN IN THE LABORATORY AT ALL TIMES. IF YOU DO NOT WEAR THEM OR VIOLATE SAFETY RULES, THE INSTRUCTOR WILL ASK YOU TO LEAVE AND YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR THE LABORATORY EXPERIMENT FOR THAT DAY. SAFETY GOGGLES CAN BE PURCHASED FROM AN ACS REPRESENTATIVE FOR $5.00. Other information and procedures about the laboratory will be discussed during the first laboratory period this week. NOTE: THE MONDAY LABORATORY SECTION MUST CHECK INTO THE LABORATORY DURING ONE OF THE OTHER SCHEDULED LABORATORY PERIODS AND YOU MUST STAY FOR THE WHOLE SESSION TO GET THE HANDOUTS AND COMPLETE LABORATORY THE EXPERIMENT. THERE WILL BE A PENALTY FOR CHECKING INTO LABORATORY DURING THE SECOND WEEK IN ADDTION TO AN INCOMPLETE FOR THE FIRST EXPERIMENT. AN ADDITIONAL LABORATORY SECTION WILL BE HELD FRIDAY AT 1:30PM. Exams, Quizzes, and Grading Scale: There will be two mid-term exams, a final exam and weekly quizzes. The regular exams will be worth 100 points and the final exam will be worth two regular exams. Since this course builds on previous material, all exams and quizzes are comprehensive. If you have a verifiable Augustana College-related activity which coincides with an exam, see notify the instructor by FRIDAY so that alternative scheduling can be made. An excused absence (i.e. illness ,death of relative) for an exam will be dealt with on a case by case basis and make-up exams will be given at the instructors discretion. The quizzes will be worth twenty point each. The quizzes will last approximately 20 minutes and will be given at the beginning or end of class. There will be no make-up quizzes and missed quizzes will be recorded as a zero. Your lowest quiz score will be dropped and total remaining quizzes will count for one exam grade. All exams and quizzes are closed book. Grading: The lecture portion of the course will account for 70% of your overall grade, while the laboratory will account for 30%. The lecture grade will consist of: Quizzes: 20 points each (equal to one exam) Mid-term Exams: 100 points each Final Exam: (equal to two exams) You can estimate your grade in the course at any time using the following grading scale. Remember: grades are earned, not given. A AB+ B BC+ 90% and above 88-89.9% 85-87.9% 78-84.9% 75-77.9% 72-74.9% C CD+ D DF 62-71.9% 55-61.9% 51-54.9% 45-50.9% 40-44.9% Below 39.9% ...
