The television advertisements always seem to begin a week before Thanksgiving while the sales start the day after. I listen to 92.1, the Christmas Music Cult I like to think of it as, every day at work since November 27 and will continue to do so until I get my Christmas break December 24. Mind you, it's not by choice, either. The mailbox at home is flooded with red, white, and green advertisements with prices lowering every day. (Not that I'm complaining; $65.92 for a pair of 7 for all Mankind jeans that were originally $367, I'll deck the halls for that.) But my point leads to America decentralizing Christmas's true purpose and is now creating a popular trend that now has taken a more secular definition. The holidays of good cheer are filled with complaints of traffic, weather, and presents. Even while shopping at Best Buy, I had purchased my brother an iPod (on sale, of course). After I had been rung out, the cashier wished me a "Happy Holiday Shopping Season". It was then I realized what Christmas and the holiday spirit had evolved into: an economic frenzy battled out parking in lots, checkout lines, and I even got to witness my next door neighbor wrestle a giant blow up of Frosty because the strings would not hold it down. So as I stared out my window, admitting to myself I've never been a wassailing, (I don't honestly even know what that means), I thought about the things that made Christmas so merry to begin with. It wasn't the designer purse with matching shoes I had wanted, nor was it virtually unlimited gift-cards to the world, but instead, I was most happy to be with family, to see snow on the ground, the authentic smell of burnt cookies and no school are reasons to celebrate to me. Whether you're Christian or of some other
denomination, or even of none at all, at least remember the reason behind Christmas; you've been given a gift, and no matter how much you do or don't get on a stupid oversized holiday doesn't make your personality unique. People may fall into the trappings of presents, or they may fall into the stress of life, but always know that everyone deserves to be happy. Have a Happy Holiday Shopping Season to you all and may you find not only sales, but comfort and joy, too.
