Creating an Online Community Discussion Area for Campus Creating an online community discussion area for a campus is a wonderful idea. Quite often the faculty and staff of schools can't quite seem to get together as often as they would like to. Often educators attend meetings and choose not to participate for numerous of reasons. This could be due to coyness or intimidation. Sometimes colleagues are working next door to each other and never share useful information. An online community discussion area planned well could alleviate or lessen these concerns. However, prior to creating an online community discussion area for a campus, superb planning must be done. Listed below are many issues that must be addressed prior to presenting the idea to the entire campus: Research, research, research Survey to determine campus' concerns, desires, and/or ideas. Organize an action/steering committee ( administrators, teachers, counselors, etc.) Consider copyright issues. Always plan with consideration of audience (faculty, staff, students?) Incorporate two way communcation Determine access Create a professional look Set up a tracking system Clearly state rules and regulations After plan is complete, for allow and encourage input during a 30 day public viewing. Be susceptible to change Encourage input. Get ready to WORK! Online community services like www.schoolnotes, www.nicenet.com, and www.groups.yahoo are online communities already working and available for those who choose to "dabble" before actually creating their own individualized community group. These online services are basic and easy to use and require very little knowledge of working with technology.
