Hist 3/12 Lecture 3/12/2008 9:01:00 AM Safavid Persia Ismail led Turkic tribesmen to Persia Conquered Iranian plateau, claimed ancient Persian title of shah Proclaimed Twelver Shiism official religion Abbas the Great, 1588-1629 o Revitalized Safavid state o Modernized its military: standing army o o o o Sought European alliances Permitted European merchants, missionaries Reaped great profits from Eurasian overland trade Centralized administration: new capital at Isfahan Did Islamic world decline in the early modern era? Yes: o Alarmed by growing Hindu population, Mughals renounced religious tolerance Hindu states eclipsed Mughal Empire by 1700 o Safavid dynasty collapsed in 1722 when Afghan tribes invaded from north In ensuing chaos Safavid dynasty lost the allegiance of its forcibly subjugated subjects and the clergy Power fell to regional warlords Growth of maritime trade after 1500s marginalized Ottoman, Safavid empires Economic growth failed to keep up with mounting costs of modern weaponry Unexplained stagnancy of population o Limited use of American crops o Loss of territory in 1700s Cultural conservatism? o Limited interest in European science o Resistance to printing press No: o Decline was relative, not absolute o Ottoman empire ceased to expand in late 1600s, confounding Ottoman elite o European powers were expanding rapidly Britain defeated, co-opted India's local powers, eclipsing and isolating Mughals Habsburg empire, Russia, and France concquered Ottoman lands, undermining sultans' role as protectors of Islam 1. Identify the cores and peripheries of the world mid-1700s in Cores Europe (dominates triangular trade), in particular Britain, Spain, France, Portugal, Dutch, Islamic world (Ottoman empire, Mughal empire, Safavid empire). In middle China (different type of core, isolated, foreign commerce controlled), Japan (see China), Russia a territorial superpower, but only core on the rise. Does not have technological or agricultural power Europe has Peripheries the Americas, Russia, China, parts of Africa. Brazil is periphery to Portugal, colonies periphery to Britain, but core to rest of N. America. 2. Rank the cores in terms of their relative power Britain, Spain, Portugal, China 3. To what extent is it possible to speak of Europe's global hegemony by the mid-eighteenth century? They had industrial superiority, expanded land, using goods from other lands they controlled, strong military and weapons, internal fighting making them stronger, wealth able to expand. 4. Think how the modernization process affected the rise of new core powers in the 1500s and 1600s Technological advancements such as gun powder and other weaponry, better ships, maps, agriculture, trade, education, literacy, printing press, mass communication spread ideas, modernization made some cores more powerful and turned some peripheries into cores. Limitations China and Japan not controlled by Europe, Africa. Europe had control only through African elites and on African terms. Modernization self contained process, China market economy, became powerful internally, socially, economically, massive demographic power. 3/12/2008 9:01:00 AM 3/12/2008 9:01:00 AM
