Spring Syllabus.Bio218: 2008 BIO 218: Principles of Molecular Biology Spring 2008 Tuesday/Thursday 12:30-1:50pm Course Instructor: Bob Loudon, Ph.D. Office: 103 Stratton Hall Phone: 215-895-6936 Email: rpl25@drexel.edu Office Hours: Thursdays 3-5pm or by appointment Required Text Principles of Genetics, Snustad and Simmons 4th Edition This is a custom textbook that utilizes selected chapters from Principles of Genetics (Snustad & Simmons, 4th Edition) and the accompanying Study Guide and Problems Workbook for "Principles of Genetics Snustad & Simmons" Written by H. James Price. The complete forth edition of this text is acceptable, the third edition of the book can be used but students are responsible for the any differences between the third and the coursespecific forth edition. Course Rationale and Description BIO 218 is a course in which we will explore the principles of molecular biology. The course is designed to familiarize you with the details and concepts revolving around molecular biology's "central dogma". Specifically you become familiar with chemical nature of DNA and RNA, the molecular structure of DNA and chromosomes, DNA replication, transcription, translation, the definition of a gene, and how gene expression is regulated. We will also discuss the current status of molecular biology in society throughout the course. Given that this is a course that covers the fundamentals of molecular biology, mastery of the material in the lecture is required for understanding of more advanced courses offered in the department. Course Objectives: The completion of this course, students will be able to: 1 Syllabus.Bio218: Spring 2008 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Describe in detail the chemical structure of nucleic acids Describe how DNA functions as genetic material Describe the goal of DNA replication as well as the details Describe goal of transcription as well as the details Describe goal of translation as well as the details Understand the molecular mechanisms of mutation and mutation repair Understand methods of gene regulation Understand the organization of the human genome Academic Expectations Students are expected to conversant with the policies, schedule, and requirements of this course as set out in this syllabus. Students are expected to have read the assigned reading material prior to lecture. Students are expected to be prepared for each lecture prior to meeting. Anyone missing a lecture for any reason is responsible for material covered in that lecture. This includes the lecture notes/slides, assigned readings, and any information presented in the actual lecture that may not have been mentioned in the slides or book. Pop (UNANNOUNCED!) Chapter Quizzes will be given at random during lecture period. The total number of quizzes to be given is undecided, but I will count your five (5) highest quiz scores towards your final grade. The remaining, lower scores will be dropped. It is important for you to know that there will be NO MAKEUP QUIZZES! If you miss a quiz for any reason it will count as a low score, unless you miss several quizzes in which case these will count as a "0" for your grade. Quiz questions will be based on the important terms, study questions, and reading for that chapter. Again, there are no make-up quizzes so do not ask me if you can make a quiz up! Exam format will be a combination of multiple choice, true/false and matching. Exam material is taken from the important terms, study questions, the textbook, and lecture. Exams from previous years will be posted on WebCT. Makeup Exams (essay-based) will only be given to those students who have a University approved excuse for their absence on the day of the exam. Students must notify me within 24 hours of the scheduled exam time to schedule a make-up exam. Students who fail to contact me within those 24 hours will not be able to make-up the exam. Resources Lecture slides are posted on the Bio218 WebCT page. Because each lecture contains numerous complicated figures I urge you to print out the slides and bring them to lecture. The slides are saved as Powerpoint files. These are large files so I urge you to consider a computer's connection speed when downloading them. When printing them out, printing the slides out in the "notes" format will give you space to write your own notes directly on the slides. Back Exams. Exams from previous years are will be posted on WebCT. Course Grading Scale: A+ = 97% or more; A = 93 - 96.99%; A- = 90 - 92.99% B+ = 87-89.99%; B = 83 - 86.99%; B- = 80 - 82.99% C+ = 77-79.99%; C = 73 - 76.99%; C- = 70 - 72.99% D+ = 67-69.99%; D = 63 - 66.99%; D- = 60 - 63.99% F = 59.99% or less 3 Syllabus.Bio218: Spring 2008 Academic Dishonesty The following is the official Department statement on Honesty: "Academic honesty is extremely important. Cheating, academic misconduct, plagiarism, and fabrication are serious breaches of academic integrity and will be dealt with according to University policy set up by the Office of Judicial Affairs". Except where group/team activity is appropriate and required by faculty, it is assumed that ALL work be solely that of the individual student whose name is associated with the work. ANY form of cheating (copying, plagiarizing, using another's work, permitting another student to use your work, falsifying data, etc.) will not be tolerated and can result in immediate disciplinary action, including the possibility of dismissal. Cheating of any sort will not be tolerated on exams or quizzes. Cheating on either will result in failure of the course and immediate referral to the appropriate Departmental heads for further disciplinary action, including possible dismissal from the university. If you are suspected of trying to engage in academic misconduct you will receive a zero for the test/exam and be referred to the Department head for disciplinary action. 4
