I will know that the learners have met the objectives when they show their appreciation for Indian Art and Legends by making beads, leg rattles, and creating their very own Indian Legend. C. Essential Vocabulary Legend 1 cups of flour 1 cups of salt 1 cup of water 2 tablespoons of Paprika String Feathers Oven Construction Paper Cardboard Corn Husks Beads Sticks Yarn F. Accommodations for Learners who have difficulty, ELL/ESL/LEP, LD, gifted, etc. For handicapped children, have them work in pairs to make the beads and leg rattles. For the legend, supply some topics for those who have trouble thinking of one, such as how the mountains were created, how the sunset gets its color, etc. G. Lesson Planning of Teaching/Learning Activities: 1. Anticipatory Set/Set Induction/Introduction/Focusing Event Read this Sioux Indian Legend about Indian dress: THE RABBIT AND THE ELK The little rabbit lived with his old grandmother, who needed a new dress. "I will go out and trap a deer or an elk for you," he said. "Then you shall have a new dress." When he went out hunting he laid down his bow in the path while he looked at his snares. An elk coming by saw the bow. "I will play a joke on the rabbit," said the elk to himself. "I will make him think I have been caught in his bow string." He then put one foot on the string and lay down as if dead. By and by the rabbit returned. When he saw the elk he was filled with joy and ran home crying: "Grandmother, I have trapped a fine elk. You shall have a new dress from his skin. Throw the old one in the fire!" This the old grandmother did. The elk now sprang to his feet laughing. "Ho, friend rabbit," he called, "You thought to trap me; now I have mocked you." And he ran away into the thicket. The rabbit who had come back to skin the elk now ran home "Grandmother, again. don't throw your dress in the fire," he cried. But it was too late. The old dress was burned. Transition: 2. Input: Outline of Presentation steps/strategies/modeling (means of instruction) A. Review from yesterday what a legend is and why it was important to the Sioux Indians. A legend is an unproven story handed down from earlier times, especially one popularly believed to be historical. While Native American culture has struggled to survive through centuries of displacement and assimilation, the stories and legends passed on from generation to generation refuse to die; this is perhaps due to their common, timeless message of peace and harmony with nature, which is now more relevant with each passing year. B. Show Pictures of Sioux Indian Dress. Today we are going to be making our own beaded jewelry and leg rattles! Beads: Materials: 1 cup of flour 1 cup of salt 1 cup of water 2 tablespoons of Paprika Measure all dry ingredients and put into a bowl. Add water and mix until workable. Form the clay into small balls and tubes. Use different objects to add texture to the beads. Push a toothpick through the centers, jiggling it around gently for the holes. Bake at 200 degrees for an hour. String onto brown string/yarn, possibly include feathers. *I will cook at home and bring back to finish tomorrow. C. Leg Rattles: Have the students color a design on a piece of construction paper. Glue it to a section of cardboard. The cardboard should be similar size to the construction paper. Punch holes around the edges of the cardboard. Next, cut lengths of raffia or corn husks and tie them onto the rattle at each hole. Add beads, shells, or sticks for rattles. Punch holes in the corners and tie with yarn to the leg. Transition: 3. Guided Practice I will then read a legend from http://fredsite.com/books/siouxlegends.htm and the students will pantomime the story as I read it. 4. Evidence of Learning: How will you know when the learners have reached the objectives? A. Did students follow directions in class? Were they disruptive? Did they actively participate in the activity? Were they helpful to other students? B. Did students produce some kind of leg rattle and bead? Did they participate when pantomiming the legend? Transition: 5. Closure and Independent Practice for transfer of learning (Assignment) Do this at home: Fold a piece of paper in half: Hot Dog Style. Write your name in cursive along the fold on white tracing paper. Flip paper over and trace what you just wrote. (So it creates a mirror image). Unfold and color. Try and find animals within your name, make into a totem pole. H. Evaluation/Reflection of Teaching/Learning: (By the student teacher How did I teach? What did I learn about my teaching? What specifically do I need to work on for improvement
