UNIVERSITY CHARLES IN PRAGUE FACULTY OF ARTS LANGUAGE RESOURCE CENTRE Paper presented at the Instructional Technology and Education of the Deaf Symposium National Technical Institute for the Deaf Rochester, New York June 2005 http://www.rit.edu/~techsym T09P This Centre offers the facility for self-study selfof different foreign languages to both hearing and deaf Charles University students. It has also some resources for vision impaired students. Recently there have been installed two special computers: one for blind and the other for vision impaired students. The Language Resource Centre is intended especially for the reference study of languages taught at the Language Centre of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University (i.e. English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Latin, Russian), Czech for foreigners, Czech Sign Language, British Sign Language and American Sign Language. Any student or teacher of the Faculty of Arts may use it and students and teachers from other academic institutions are welcome as well. Paper presented at the Instructional Technology and Education of the Deaf Symposium National Technical Institute for the Deaf Rochester, New York June 2005 http://www.rit.edu/~techsym T09P 1 For several years the LRC has been taking active part in the Transformation and Development Project of Charles University Information and Advisory Centre aimed at helping the students with special needs, generously sponsored by the Czech Ministry of Education. The LRC cooperates with the Language Centres at the University of Bristol and the University of Wolverhampton in Great Britain. The main project of the LRC concerns Teaching English to Deaf and Hard-of- Hearing Students. The LRC Hard- ofStudents. cooperates on this project with the Nippon Foundation, the NTID in Rochester, New York, Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., and with the above mentioned British universities. All the LRC recent grant projects concern teaching English to Deaf and Hard-ofHard- ofHearing students. The aim is to improve the situation in secondary and tertiary spheres of the Deaf Education in the Czech Republic. Paper presented at the Instructional Technology and Education of the Deaf Symposium National Technical Institute for the Deaf Rochester, New York June 2005 http://www.rit.edu/~techsym T09P 2 The latest one, a five year project, which is run by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology, New York, has a different, wider goal: York, establishing a worldwide university network that would serve deaf and hard-of-hearing people in hard- ofmany countries. The project is called PEN International, and a part of it was also the International Teacher-Training Seminar for TeacherTeachers of English to the Deaf which was held in Prague in August 2004. Summer at School Gallaudet The LRC also organizes English Summer School Programmes for Czech deaf and hard-of-hearing Faculty of Arts students at hard- ofGallaudet University and at Bristol University. One of the goals is to compare both deaf language teaching modules how they function in the USA and in Great Britain, and to compare the efficiency of applied teaching methods and strategies in both of these countries.
