Chang Fall 2008 Plan 211: Digital ViSualization For PlannerS This portfolio exhibits the work I have completed during the fall of 2008 in Professor David Phillips PLAN 211: Digital Visualization for Planners class. The course introduces students to a variety of computer programs that planners use for representing information and data in the digital form. Our class focused on the West Main Street Neighborhood in Charlottesville, Virginia. Each assignment focused on a particular skill set or computer program. The following pages display the final products of these exercises. I learned how to work with HTML, link images and pages, and manipulate captured images. technology: Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop www.people.virginia.edu/~csc7f 4 PoSter DeSign goal: To create a poster that displays a specific aspect of the West Main Neighborhood Method: Using Adobe Photoshop, I manipulated images taken from our site visit and assembled them in different layers. I worked with different graphic tools to adjust font styles and colors. technology: Adobe Photoshop 5 baSe MaPPing goal: To create a series of maps that highlight structures, roads, and other features Method: Using ArcGIS ArcMap, I merged aerial photos with planimetric data to create a series of base maps. I manipulated features such as map layout, symbology, and colors. technology: ArcGIS ArcMap 6 iMage ProCeSSing Before after goal: To edit a photograph taken from our site visit and remove obstructions such as power lines, trees, and shadows Method: Using Adobe Photoshop, used I the clone stamp tool and multiple layers to replace portions of the photograph. I also adjusted the brightness and color balance of the photograph. 7 technology: Adobe Photoshop iMage tranSitionS goal: To create a series of images that displays the transition from an image taken from ArcScene to a digital photograph 1 2 Method: Using ArcScene, I captured an image to match the perspective of the digital photograph. I manipulated the size of this image and overlayed it on the actual photograph. I used different opacities to show the transition. 3 technology: ArcGIS Arc Scene, Adobe Photoshop 4 5 8 3D MoDeling goal: To create a 3D rendering of a building from the West Main Neighborhood that uses digital photographs as textures Method: Using Adobe Photoshop, I manipulated images for each faade of my building. In Google SketchUp, I extruded the footprint of my building and used my manipulated images as textures for my 3D model. I also adjusted the brightness and color balance of SketchUp materials to match my building textures. technology: Adobe Photoshop, Google SketchUp 9 theMatiC MaPPing goal: To create a series of thematic maps that shows census data of the West Main Neighborhood Method: Using ArcGIS ArcMap and data from the US 2000 Census, I created a series of three maps that discuss homeownership data in Charlottesville. I manipulated the symbology and colors of the maps to enhance their legibility. technology: ArcGIS ArcMap 10 3D urban exerCiSe goal: To export images taken from a 3D version of the West Main Neighborhood and create a flythrough animation Method: Using ArcGIS ArcScene, I exported a series of images captured throughout the West Main neighborhood.
