Introduction 1.1 Purpose of the OCD Document The Operational Concept Description (OCD) for Data Mining of Digital Library Usage Data describes to the stakeholders how the new USC Digital Library Log Analysis System will function within their environment. This document is the Life Cycle Objectives (LCO) version of OCD. The OCD document consists of the scope of the proposed system. Some specific parts are described under different topic in this document. It not only covers the description of the new system, but also includes the primary benefits for client, and agreement on the high level structure of the project of the new system. The OCD will be served as reference and guidance for all stakeholders as to how the system will operate within its environment. Stakeholders can then make further recommendations on this system, and evolve it to a new operational concept from the current one. The development stakeholders will also have a better understanding of the system, and will make development decisions consistent with the operational objectives and constraints. Shared Vision 2.1 System Capability Description The USC Digital Library staff has requested an archive usage analysis system as a supplement to standard web metrics such as hit counts. Our proposed usage analysis system will retrieve usage data from the digital library archive and will create relationship graphs for digital archive items. These graphs will give librarians a global structural view of the collections and will help them make decision on updating the collections. This system will be different from other systems because it automates creation of references/relations between digital library uses and documents, and can work with images and other items that do not have metadata or textual description. The system will be based on research by Dr. Johan Bollen, and will provide data for his future research. 2.1.1 Benefits Realized The proposed USC Digital Archive Usage Analysis System has several key benefits. The librarians can use the results of the analysis to have better understandings of the digital archive collection and usage trends. Based on the information, they can make further improvements to the digital archive. The system will make it easier for library staff to make decisions on which items should be removed/added to the collection. These analyses include data usage, clustered image evaluations, user trend analysis, and shortterm image/document impact ranking versus long-term. The proposed system can also benefit Dr. Johan Bollen and other researchers who conduct their works on digital libraries and digital archives. Data and analysis reports produced by the system will be provided to researchers so that they can apply it to their research projects. By analyzing logs and creating subsequent relationships, the system displays digital item characterizes, which will help digital library staff to gain a better understanding of the archive collection structure. The system also displays item accessibilities, so that the library staff can see the popularity of items, thus have a better understanding of library usage. The system also visualizes relationships between items, so that staff can see graphically the archive usage trend over time. Implementing the new system also means new ways of evaluation archive usage. Thus, digital library staff must be trained to learn to use the system to ensure effective use of the system. Give so, a set of training objectives to digital library staff will be formulated. The system will need to use existing open-source software (open source) to save implementation time. Must provide dynamic graphical user interfaces for data presentation. 2.4.1 Special focus: Further Shared Vision Elements for Large Systems Special focus is not needed since this is a small development project. 2.5 Top-Level Business Case The implementation of the Usage Analysis System for the USC Digital Library does not incur any costs since there is no budget for the development of this system. Even so, the quantitative and qualitative benefits realized in the Result Chain outcomes are tremendous. By analyzing digital items relationships and user trends, the Usage Analysis System can assist library staff to make improvements in the digital archive collections and assists researchers on their researches. 2.6 Inception Phase Plan and Required Resources Since this project does not have any budgets, stakeholders do not need to have financial resources involved. As for human resources involvements, stakeholders have different commitments during the inception phase, depending on their role in the project. Domain/Organization Description The USC Digital Library Usage Analysis System is being built to enhance the USC Digital Library service and to provide a user trend and digital item relationships analysis system. Currently, there exist usage analysis systems that have been built as part of the recommender services, such as the recommender services for the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Research Library (RL), the Open Video Project, and the NASA Technical Reports Archive, and our goal is to create a similar system for the USC Digital Library. The proposed usage analysis system will assist USC Digital Library employees and staff in evaluating image/document usage and impacts by providing a mechanism with which to cluster related images and analyzing archive user trends. The library staff can gain better understandings of item relationships, current archive usage, and user trends over periods of time. These analyses will contribute to the USC Digital Library's continual efforts to modify archive collections in order to satisfy user needs and improve library services. 3.1 Organization Background The USC Library is part of the USC Information Services Division (USC-ISD), which is responsible for USC's networking, library services, academic computing, and telecommunications. The Resources and Services Group of the USC-ISD will manage the USC Digital Archive Usage Analysis System and its data collection, while the development of the system will be taken care of by USC graduate students. They also manage systems that were acquired from outside resources. For the digital library system, the project managers take charge of every aspects of the implementation of the digital library system, and they also request usage data from the system administrator. 3.3.1.2 Program Manager The system administrator of the usage analysis system will be the USC-ISD program manager who oversees the Data Mining of Digital Library Usage Data project. The system administrator will manage the day-to-day operations of the digital library, once the system is in full operation. 3.3.1.3 Digital Library Staffs Digital library faculty and staff contribute to the management of the USC Digital Library. They are responsible for maintaining and enhancing the digital library system, evaluating user logs and trends, and making enhancement proposals for discussion. 3.3.2 Artifacts The following describes current artifacts inspected, manipulated, or produced by the organization. 11* # ## 22 0# ) # ## 22 11/ " ## < < ( ! Based on these reports, the digital library staff can make improvements to the digital archive. The reports will be distributed to all digital library staff members during regularly scheduled meetings, in which they will discuss potential improvements that can be made to the digital library. 3.3.2.2 Log Data The USC-ISD updates log data regularly, which includes information such as user's IP, item id and time of retrieval. These log files will then be imported by the log analysis system to produce the usage analysis report. Based on these reports, the digital library staff can see all user activities in the digital archive. The set of log data will be distributed to all digital library staff members during regularly schedule meetings, in which they will discuss about potential improvements that can be made to the digital library. 3.3.3 Processes The digital library staff holds meetings regularly to evaluate data usage and discuss improvements to the digital archive. Proposed System This section depicts the proposed system for Data Mining of Digital Library Usage Data and explains what the system is, what it performs and how well it performs. 4.1 Statement of Purpose The USC library staff needs a digital archive usage analysis system which can provide a more detailed analysis than a simple web metrics system. Our proposed system can retrieve necessary data from the digital library archive and perform suitable analysis on user trends, impact ranking, and image/document clustering. These analyses will have digital library staff to gain in-depth knowledge about digital archive usage trends, archive collection structure, and item relationships.
