Surface is inked, ink transferred to paper with pressure. Woodcut (woodblock), wood engraving, and linoleum cut are relief processes. Examples in everyday life: stamps, fingerprint or wet tire marks. Intaglio Opposite of relief. Areas below the surface hold ink the image to be printed is either cut or scratched into a metal surface with tools, or etched in by acid. Engraving lines cut into surface with a burin. Precise, smooth curves, & parallel lines Drypoint -use a thin tool to cut into surface, leave the displaced metal, aka burr. Burr catching ink leaves a slightly blurred line when printed. Fragile prints, delicate lines Etching prepare plate with acid-resistant ground, etch through ground with a tool, immerse plate in acid, which bites into the exposed lines. Relaxed lines, more freedom. Aquatint etching process involving acid-resistant spray paints. Does not make lines. Makes shaded areas. Planographic (lithography) Lithography is basically etching without cutting into the surface. The full explanation is a little more involved, but thats all Ms Zucker is probably going to ask. Stencil (screen-printing) transferring ink through a screen that is adhered to a stencil.
