Phone: (802) 656-4294 Book: Understandable Statistics 9th Edition by Brase and Brase Course Description: Elements of Statistics is a course designed to introduce and explore the principle ideas of statistics. We will begin by looking at how statistical data can be understood using measures of spread (mean, median, etc.) and graphs (histograms, pie-charts, etc.). From here we will investigate the basics of probability and eventually study particular types of distributions (normal, binomial, etc.). This will be followed by a brief discussion of sampling distributions and the idea of confidence intervals and hypothesis tests. We will finish the course by looking at the relationship between numerical data using scatter-plots, correlation, and regression and the relationships between categorical data using contingency tables and the chi-square test. You will need to purchase a calculator to do some arithmetic for this course. Make sure that it at least has the ability to do exponents and roots. I prefer the TI-83 or TI-84 models as they are quite easy to use. Grading: The grading system is as follows: MAIN PROJECT (14%)---There will be one main project. The main project will be completed in groups of at most three students. All students in a group will receive the same grade. The main project grade will count towards 14% of your final grade. MIDTERM TESTS (36%)---There will be three midterm tests. Each test will count towards 12% of your final grade. FINAL EXAM (20%)---There will be a cumulative final exam given at the end of the semester. The final exam will count towards 20% of your final grade. ASSIGNMENTS (30%)---There will be 10 weekly assignments. Difficulty may vary, but all will be weighted the same. After the last assignment has been completed, the lowest two grades will be dropped and the remaining grades will be averaged. HOMEWORK (0%)---Homework shall be issued on a regular basis, usually nightly following a days lesson. At the start of each period, a comprehensive question and answer session will be held for students to work together and with the instructor on any problems encountered when attempting/doing the homework. Homework assignments will be posted on a daily basis on the webpage. Do homeworkit the will help! A copy can be found online. In addition to these rules, students shall respect the thoughts and ideas of both the instructor and the other students present in the class. The instructor shall also adhere to these same rules. Also, please turn off all cell-phones, pagers, walkmans, CD-Players, mp3-Players, and any other noise making doodads during the class. Late Work/Absences: If you miss the due date of an assignment you will receive a 0%. Make-up tests will be given if an emergency arises. Office Hours/Help Sessions: My office hours are posted on my web-page given above. Just click on the SCHEDULE option. Help sessions are scheduled to run throughout the semester and times and locations will be given in the future. Academic Assistance: Students with documented learning disabilities are entitled by law to certain reasonable accommodations. If you have a documented reason for special accommodations, you must provide written evidence of this as soon as possible from the appropriate office. Further info at http://www.uvm.edu/~aspprogs/. Academic Calendar: Here is a very tentative copy of the course calendar---I may get ahead or behind by a section, and if a test date changes you will be given fair warning.
