I assume Dr. Tenenberg, that when you say we cannot use an array initializer you mean something like this:
int[][] ArrayOfInts = {{1,2},{3,5,6,7},{3,5,2}};
Though I'm not sure what you meant here - "Position objects with the same shape, where each Position object encodes its [i][j] indices". We could do this:
int[][] ArrayOfInts = new int [3][];
ArrayOfInts[0] = new int[2];
ArrayOfInts[1] = new int[4];
ArrayOfInts[2] = new int[3];
This would give use the array above but not filling it with numbers (well it would fill it with zeros). Since in J++ multidimensional arrays are arrays of arrays this will work. But I'm still not sure if this is moving toward what you asked.
