4-H Idaho Wool Contest Sponsored by Idaho Wool Growers Association Idaho State 4-H Office Guidelines and Portfolio/Entry Packet General Information The Promotion Division of the Idaho Wool Growers Association offers awards to Idaho 4-H members who make garments from wool fabric or yarn at the Basic and Advanced levels. Contestants will participate in judging at the county on construction and fit (style revue or interview) and at the state level on construction and their Wool Contest Portfolio. Purpose 1. To develop clothing construction skills related to working with wool. 2. To increase participation in 4-H projects and activities. General Eligibility Basic LevelParticipants: Must be a 4-H member 12 to 16 years of age as of January 1 of the year they will compete. Must be enrolled in a 4-H Project where they construct or make a garment using a minimum 60% wool blend fabric* or yarn with basic construction techniques. Basic Level Example: ClothingPants, skirt, vest, jumper, cape, etc. Knit/CrochetSweater, vest, etc. (see photo examples online at http://www.4h.uidaho.edu/programs/Contest/Wool/index.htm) Advanced LevelParticipants: Must be a 4-H member at least 14 and not have reached their 19th birthday by January 1 of the year they will compete. Must be enrolled in a 4-H Project where they construct or make a garment/outfit using a minimum 60% wool blend fabric* or yarn. Construct a garment or outfit (see photos of past entries online) with at least four advanced construction elements on wool. *To test your fabric for wool content place a 1 square in 1 cup NEW CLOROX bleach. 100% wool will begin to disintegrate within 1 hour and should have no residue after several hours. Wool blends will have fibers remaining. Note: Fabric finishes and other natural fibers may affect the test results. County Qualifications (Basic and Advanced Levels) 1. Must meet all requirements of the 4-H project in which the garment or outfit is made. (4-H Record Book required.) 2. Completed outfit or garment will be judged at county level using standard county project judging forms for construction and either a 4-H style revue or a fit-interview. 3. Contestants MUST receive a Blue or 1st place ribbon on the entrys construction and fit (either a style revue or fit-interview) to be eligible to participate in the State Level Contest. State Level Wool Contest (Basic and Advanced Levels) 1. The 2007 State 4-H Wool Contest will be held in District IV the first week in November. Entries will be judged on construction and the completed Wool Contest Portfolio. 2. If you qualify at the County level, have County Extension Office notify the district contact. 3. Complete the Wool Contest Portfolio which includes: 4-H Wool Contest Portfolio & Photo Guidelines cover sheet The Idaho 4-H Official Wool Contest Entry Packet. 4-H Wool Contest Story Five (5) photographs to include a front, left side, right side, back view, and favorite pose of contestant wearing outfit or garment. 4. Submit outfit or garment and Wool Contest Portfolio (needs 4 signatures: contestant, parent/guardian, leader, Extension personnel) to State Contest contact. District and State winners will be announced and displayed at the 2007 Idaho Wool Growers annual meeting in November. Awards All Participants in the state contest will receive a length of wool fabric donated by a 4-H leader. Entries will be divided into the four 4-H Extension districts to determine district winners. Previous State Winners are not eligible to enter future 4-H Wool Contests. The following cash award winners will be determined at the discretion of the judges using the minimum contest score. Basic Level Awards: District Level: The first place winner from each District will receive a $25 award. State Level: The first place over-all winner will receive an additional $100.00 award. Advanced Level Awards: District Level: The top scoring entry from each District will receive a $100.00 award. State Level: The first place winner will receive an additional $600.00 award. The second place winner will receive a $300.00 award. The third place winner will receive a $150.00 award. (Note: Overall scores will determine the second and third place advanced winners. These winners do not need to be a top district winner.) Use of Awards Winners are encouraged to use their award to advance their education. Procedures for claiming awards will be sent to winners after the State Contest. Required Photo Guidelines a. Professional photographs not required or recommended. b. Use photo corners to attach photos to one side of paper (so photo can be easily removed). c. Use plain paper (Card stock weight recommended) d. Use non-glare sheet protectors. e. Photo size - Minimum 3x 5 - Maximum 5x 7 f. Do not use scrapbook formatting/decorating on photos A D, optional for photo E. g.
