4283: BCOM Global and Intercultural Communication in Business The J. Whitney Bunting School of Business Georgia College and State University Spring Semester 2009 Instructor: Dr. Sally Humphries Class: 2:00 3:15pm TTH, ATK 110 Atkinson 303, (478) 445-2564 Email: sally.humphries@gcsu.edu Web: http://hercules.gcsu.edu/~shumphri/ Office Hours: Tuesday: 9:30 11:15am and 3:15 4:15 (Milledgeville) Thursday: 9:30 11:15am (Milledgeville) and 5:00 5:30pm (Macon) Other times available by appointment Course Description: This course is designed to review the business communication issues in a global and intercultural society. Included are the global and intercultural communications carried out by managers in organization, the variables and ethics that influence these communications, and the management of information systems. Emphasis is placed on the ethical and legal problems encountered in international communication. Course Objectives: 1. To recognize and understand the business communication elements from a global and intercultural perspective. 2. To develop, write, and present communication messages and reports for global audiences. 3. To analyze cultural, language, global etiquette, and business and social customs differences. 4. To study intercultural negotiation processes and strategies. 5. To review laws affecting international business. 6. To analyze ethical standards in global and intercultural communication situations and problems encountered by managers. Required Text: Beamer, L. & Varner, I. (2008). Intercultural Communication in the Global Workplace, Fourth Edition, McGraw-Hill Irwin. Course Requirements: 1. Class discussion/participation. This class will be conducted in a seminar/discussion style. It will be essential that you have read the assigned material and are prepared to contribute to each class discussion. Priceless. 2. Current Global Events Reports. To start most classes, students will be randomly chosen to share a current global event/issue with the class. Sources may include newspapers, news magazines, and the current literature. To be considered current, the event/issue must be less than 2 weeks old. Students will summarize the article and relate the event/issue to topics presented in class. In addition to the oral presentation, a copy of the source of the article that clearly identifies the source and date must be produced upon demand to receive full credit. 50 points. 3. Exams. There will be three exams during the course of the semester (see calendar below). Each exam will be worth points. 100 4. Country Factoids. You will be required to gather specific information about 3 different countries. Students will select countries from a list with no duplications. Required information and format directions are available on the class web page. Please feel free to turn these in before their due dates. 25 points each.
