ENVIRONMENTAL CH.7 SUSTAINABILITY *Global Business & Environmental Sustainability -Environmental Sustainability: Economic growth that maintains the environment for future Generations. -Humans may now be consuming more than our planet can replace. -Basic causes include: -rich nation (esp. US) consumption -rapid population & economic growth in developing nations *Threats to Sustainability -local pollution of air, water, &land -depletion of nonrenewable resources -depletion of renewable resources -defrestation -overgrazing & soil loss -declining fisheries -ecosystem destruction & loss of biodiversity -global warming *Ecological Footprint concept combines areas needed for: -cropland -grazing land -forest products -fishing grounds -sustainable use of energy -built-up land *Global Business & Sustainability: Critical Views -global companies exploit weak laws & despoil local environments in developing countries -long distance trade is itself polluting -ships & seaports -cargo aircraft -diesel trucks -western consumerism should be discouraged in the less affluent world -runaway consumption in developing nations may lead to an environmental disaster *Environmental Skepticism -skeptics argue that some environmental problems are overstated -the cost of fixing these problems, especially global warming, exceeds the cost of the damage itself. -some priorities are misplaced. *Achieving environmental sustainability globally -demand side switch to less damaging consumption patterns -moral arguments will have limited impact on consumer behavior -to limit demand, government intervention is needed -australia will phase out most incandescent bulbs by 2010. -tougher U.S. CAF standards? -higher taxes on energy -supply side create new technologies for products & manufacturing processes that have less Impact on environment Fuels: *Alternative Ethanol -different alcohols can be mixed with gas or burned separately in flex engines -ethanol produces as much CO2 as gasoline, but because organics take in CO2 to grow, the net Gain is, in theory, zero *Has ethanol been hyped? -scientists believe making ethanol from corn uses as much energy as it saves -subsidies benefit big producers like Archer Daniels Midland -sugar cane is a much better source of ethanol, but US protectionism limits its import *Alternative Fuels: Biodiesel -made from organic sources -works with diesel engines -emits less CO2 -need to use low sulfur technology -supply of organics not large enough to entirely supplant petroleum *A World Hydrogen Economy? -advocates say using hydrogen as the basis for energy could: -wean the world from oil -slow global warming -lift billions of people out of poverty *Hydrogen Economics -Creation: Electricity generated from renewable sources, such as solar cells or wind turbines, is used to break water into hydrogen & oxygen -Transport: Pressurized hydrogen is shipped by trucks, rail, & pipelines to fuel cells in buildings, Factories, or vehicles -Usage: Inside a fuel cell, hydrogen recombines with oxygen in the air to generate electricity, which can be used to power buildings, cars & trucks. *Has Hydrogen Been Hyped? -converting electricity to hydrogen wastes energy. The technology requires an abundance of electricity from renewable sources -fuel cells were invented in 1839. This may be the technology of the future, & always will be! *Developing a Corporate Environmental Strategy -Stage 1: Pollution Prevention -ISO 14,000 standard -BASF (collocation in Asia) -Stage 2: Product Stewardship -HP (recycle laser printer cartridges) -BMW (design for disassembly) -Stage 3: Clean Technology -Monsanto (from chemicals to biotech)
