Three Week SRT210 Week Overview Change Management Revision Control Time Management Change management is an organized effort to implement changes to a system Change Management Typically, change management involves the following elements: The goal is to complete the changes with minimal impact on the users and related systems Communication is a vital component of all change management stages All steps should be properly documented Planning Implementation Evaluation Revision control in the technological side of the change management Usually, revision control uses software to keep track of changes to systems or software Revision history allows tracking of changes and quick reversion of changes in case of problems Revision Control Revision control is heavily used in software development, but system administrators can use the same tools to control vital elements of their systems configuration files, accounts etc. Revision control should not be confused with backup Linux has several software tools available for revision control Perhaps the most popular and simplest to use is the RCS package Revision Control for Linux You will need to install RCS on your systems from source code Complex scenarios can be addressed though other tools such as CVS and Subversion As a nonroot user: RCS Installation Download the latest version of RCS Untar the source Run the ./configure script Compile the source using make You will need the gcc package installed As a root user: Install the software using make install RCS Usage Files brought are under RCS control through checking them in and out Use the ci utility to check in files Use the co utility to check out files Notes: RCS stores version differences By default, the version file is created in the same directory as the original Use ./RCS subdirectories if you want to keep version files separately Use the l option (locking) when you wish to edit the file Lock is counterintuitive remember that it is seen from the RCS side Time Management Time management, although being a commonsense term requires training In it, good time management boils down to using available time efficiently Prioritize your tasks Plan out your work Delegate tasks (if you can) Learn how to deal with others users and management Especially learn how to deal with interruptions Try to avoid making the same mistakes over and over Automate your routine tasks Find time to rest Work assigned: Week Three Tasks Inst...
