It has been proposed that the U.S. Forest Service be transferred from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the U.S. Department of the Interior. Below is a compilation of responses from the FOR 100 teams to questions regarding information needs, information sources, and potential decision-makers relevant to this proposal.
What information do you think would be needed to make a sound decision on the proposal? What questions would you like to ask? Who will oversee the Department? What benefits would result from the transfer? Who would benefit? Advantages and disadvantages of switching agencies? Both sides of the argument? How are both Departments organized? Economic issues? Will it cost more to move? Cost/benefit ratio? Will any parts of USDA or Department of the Interior be negatively affected? Why is the transfer being proposed? Who proposed the transfer? I would need to know the difference between the two Departments. How is the Department of Agriculture doing now? What is the Department of the Interior? Would it have the same regulation? Would it have a different budget? Why was forestry in the Department of the Interior to start with? What changes would take place? How does the Forest Service operate? Statistics on current situation as opposed to proposed one? Cost to taxpayers? How will it affect jobs? peoples Which Department is better suited for the job? Which Department would have more funds to spend on the U.S. Forest Service? Which Department would give the Forest Service more freedom?
