HOW TO GET VRAY FOR RHINO WORKING
1.Go to Render, Current Renderer, Vray for Rhino
2.Go to Vray, Options
a.Go to File, Load load the settings file as provided in the email (true_general)
3.You can now render using Vray.
HOW TO SET A MATERIAL
1.Make a new layer (i.e. Glazing)
2.Under the Material Library section of the Layers Palette there is a small circle, click it.
3.You can choose a Basic or Plugin type of material. Choose Basic.
4.Experiment with colour and other settings.
HOW TO SET A VRAY MATERIAL
1.Make a new layer (i.e. Glazing)
2.Under the Material Library section of the Layers Palette there is a small circle, click it.
3.You can choose a Basic or Plugin type of material. Choose Plugin.
4.You can now Browse and Create, or if you already have a material, you can Edit it.
5.Choose Create.
6.On the left is a list of materials. Right click on the material you just created (defaultmaterial) and click Rename rename it to something logical (i.e. glazing_blue)
7.On the right hand side, click the Diffuse roll out and change the colour.
TOO ADD REFLECTIONS
8.On the left hand side, expand your material and right click on Reflection Layers, and then Add New Layer.
9.Expand the Reflection layers and click your new reflection layer.
10.On the right hand side, change the reflection colour from black to white to vary the reflection.
TOO ADD REFRACTION (i.e. TRANSPARENCY)
7.On the left hand side, expand your material and right click on Refraction Layers, and then Add New Layer.
8.Expand the Refraction layers and click your new refraction layer.
9.On the right hand side, click the Diffuse roll out and change the Transparency to a colour of your choice between black and white (where white is totally transparent) this affects how much of the diffuse colour is taken into account.
10.Still on the right hand side, click the Refraction roll out change the refraction colour from black to white to vary the reflection.
MAPS
1.Remember, next to all the colour boxes there is a map box. Upper case M means that there is already a map being used. Lower case m means there is no map being used. Click the m to add a map.
2.There are various types, an important one is Bitmap choose this to map a texture.
TO CONTROL HOW A TEXTURE MAPS ONTO A SURFACE
1.Go to RENDERED VIEWPORT (CTRL+ALT+R).
2.Select the object, make sure it is on the right layer with the material already applied.
3.Type PROPERTIES.
4.Go to the drop down box in the properties palette. Choose Texture Mapping.
5.Click Custom, and play here.
Note 1 Vray materials are quicker and have more control than basic materials.
Note 2 In the Vray Materials options, transparency and refraction are NOT the same.
Note 3 When you add a Reflection layer, Fresnel mapping is applied by default to the reflections. You should generally leave this as it is the most effective/accurate mode of reflection mapping.
====== Unrolling and physical modelling ======
This is all about unrolling models for physical prototpying for those who weren't at class.
REMINDER
A surface is a single, infinitely thin field defined by a series of points. For example, a flat plane.
SELSRF
A polysurface is a series of 2 or more surfaces connected. They can be open or closed. For example, a zig-zag wall.
SELPOLYSRF
An open polysurface has 1 or more edges that do not connect to another surface. For example, an open box or a box with no lid.
SELOPENPOLYSRF
A closed polysurface has all edges connecting to other surfaces. These are also known as solids. For example, a closed box.
SELCLOSEDPOLYSRF
The unroll command will unroll polysurfaces but it will just treat them as a series of surfaces (as they truly are) this means that it will not do it intelligently, a i.e. box wont unroll into an easy to build box pattern.
A QUICK GUIDE TO UNROLLING
1.Select the surface or Polysurface you want to unroll.
2.Type UNROLLSRF
a.Explode changes whether Rhino unrolls a polysurface trying to maintain the way it is joined. If you choose No, it will unroll it with at least one edge joined to another. This is good for simple shapes, but for complex shapes you will end up with many overlapping surfaces. Explode makes no difference when unrolling single surfaces.
b.Labels changes whether Rhino labels each edge with a number. These can be used to match up the edge to edge.
3.For complex shapes, use Explode = Yes, Labels = Yes, and match them up by hand.
4.For simple shapes, use Explode = No, Labels = No
5.Your unrolled surface will be placed near the origin (0,0,0), flattened on the X,Y plane.
6.If you unroll many surfaces, they will start at 0,0,0 and be placed sequentially along the X plane.
PRINTING UNROLLED SURFACES TO BUILD A MODEL
1.There are two ways to print from Rhino 4, you can print ad hoc, or using a layout. This is the layout method which is better for consistency. Layout is similar to Pages in Autocad.
2.Type LAYOUT make sure you are in your desired view, i.e. Top, or Perspective, etc.
a.You will be asked to specify a page and a printer.
b.After doing so you will be presented with a new page layout.
3.This page layout will have a border double clicking inside the border will get you to model space, double clicking outside will get you to paper space same as Autocad. You can also flip between these two modes by right clicking on the blue tab in the top left and selecting Enable Detail or Enable Page.
4.Double click inside the border, or use Enable Detail.
5.Right click on the blue tab in the top left and select Scale Detail.
a.You will be asked for a scale in two parts, x:y
b.Distance on page = 1
c.Distance on model = scale of your choice, i.e. 500 would be 1:500
6.You now have a scaled unwrap you can print.
