Sobek II, Ph.D. 306C Roberts Hall, 994-7140, dsobek@ie.montana.edu Office Hours: TBD MWF 8:00-8:50 a.m., 412 Roberts Hall www.coe.montana.edu/ie/faculty/sobek/ime444 1 credit lecture, 1 credit recitation, 1 credit independent study none I&ME 434: Project and Engineering Management I&ME 442: Facility and Material Handling Systems Design I&ME 458: Production and Engineering Management I&ME 444 and I&ME 445 must be taken concurrently, in the students final year Senior capstone course. Second course in senior capstone sequence. A comprehensive open-ended team design project emphasizing the use of computers to plan and evaluate facility designs, their location, and materials handling systems. Technical and economic feasibility studies. Oral and written communication emphasized. Class: Course Web: Credits: Required Text: Prerequisites: Co-requisites: Catalog: Objectives: Take on a substantial, open-ended problem and successfully deliver a wellengineered solution to meet a set of client needs. Integrate tools and concepts from multiple IE arenas, and apply them to a real-world situation. Improve skills in interacting professionally with clients and others. Improve teamwork, interpersonal and formal communication skills. Apply project planning, tracking and control concepts and tools to a live project, and actively manage it. Cap your college education with an integrative experience, and deliver a final product that you can be proud of. Course Structure: I&ME 444 and 445 are taught as an integrated, project-based course. You will be assigned to work on a team to provide a client with an engineered solution to their business or operational problem. Your team will be responsible for all phases of the project, including: understanding client needs, project scoping and definition, data collection, idea generation, engineering analysis, documentation, client communication, and project management. We will meet as a class on Wednesdays and Fridays for the month of January, then just on Wednesdays for the remainder of the semester. These times will be used to take care of logistics, review project assignments, and conduct just-in-time training on pertinent topics. Attendance is mandatory. Your team will meet with a faculty advisor on a weekly basis at a mutually agreeable time. At these meetings you will give a status report, and the advisor will query you about your work to-date and plans for the coming week(s). Advisors will offer guidance and suggestions as needed. Attendance of all team members is expected. Grading: Grades will be based primarily on overall team performance, and secondarily on individual contribution, as follows: 15% 10% 15% 10% 50% Individual journal Weekly advisor meetings (includes project management) Interim presentation and written report Design Fair poster and team interview Final written report I will determine a final letter grade with input from faculty advisors. You will receive the grade same for I&ME 444 and 445. Individual grades may differ from team grades depending on individual circumstances. I do not accept late work, although exceptions may be granted for extenuating circumstances at my discretion. The final exam time is set by the registrars office. Attendance is mandatory. I expect each student to make full effort to attend every scheduled class meeting, advisor session, and team meeting. If you do miss a class or meeting, you are responsible to take the initiative to find out what you missed, and to perform any make-up work as quickly as possible.
