Alone Im and O.K. Objectives: Objective 1: Practice safety around the home and personal safety Objective 2: Practice decision-making skills you would use when staying home alone Target Audience: K-5th grade children (best suited for Kindergarten and 1st grade) Life Skill(s): Self-Responsibility Character Focus: Responsibility Delivery Mode: Group Meeting Time Allotted: 30 minutes Materials Needed for the Lesson: Figures or puppets, printed on poster board with popsicle sticks or tongue depressors or actual puppets O.K. Kelly Tweety Bird Pink Panther McGruff Telephone First Aid Kit Firemans hat, matches Flashlight Number of Participants: 2 to 50 Author(s): Eloise Futrell, Family Life Specialist (Retired), Made available by Diane D. Sasser, Ph. D., and Lanette Hebert, 4-H Coordinator, Southwest and Central Regions TIPS FOR VOLUNTEERS EDUCATORS Have all of your props laid out on top of desk. Remember to place props in order of your presentation to prompt you of the progression of your talk. Children can see your production better and will be more attentive if they are gathered around you on the floor. If the class is large, some children could sit in desks arranged in a semi- circle behind the children on the floor. It is very difficult to get and keep every childs attention all of the time. That is why it is important to keep things moving and exciting and to have lots of props. To keep the childrens attention, use a variety of techniques. Be animated, whisper sometimes, and hold surprises behind your back or in a box. Ask questions, for example, Im thinking of a character youve seen on TV, and his motto is, Take a bite out of crime. Hes not a cat, or a cow or an elephant. Or, What might happen if you are close to a window in a bad storm? Caution: If you ask too many questions, be prepared for lots of answers and everyone wanting his or her turn to talk. Because of time constraints, it will be best to limit questions. Use them when youve lost their interest or attention. Examples: Who can tell me? Raise your hand if A script has been provided only as a training guide and a tool by which you can practice your presentation. An outline, typed or printed on a note card may keep you on track. Remember to go with the flow. Just read the audience to see if they are interested or bored. If something is not working well for you, move on. What You Say: What You Do: Have props all lined up in order of use since you will be using puppets in one hand and manipulating props with the other. Or recruit a helper. What Participants Do: Good morning/afternoon! My name is ________________ . I am so excited about being with you today! I have a lot of very important things to go over with you and some fun, surprise guests I brought along to help you learn some new skills. First of all, Id like to go over some rules so that we can all have a good time. Since time is limited and I have so much to share with you, you need to put on your listening ears stay quiet until it is your turn to talk. And if you have a question, I ask that you remember to raise your hand for me to see. Now that you are all sitting perfectly still and quiet, lets meet our first guest of the day. (Reach into the box; put O.K. Kelly on your hand; bring him out) Well here he is! His name is O.K. Kelly. He wants to help you to be okay when youre home alone. Thats how he gets his name, O.K. Kelly. How many of you sometimes stay home alone or with just a young brother or sister? (Have O.K. Kelly look all around the room) (Now look at O.K. Kelly) Wow, O.K. Kelly! We have some important things to talk about with all these boys and girls. When youre home alone, it can be scary, huh? (Have O.K. Kelly shake head yes) What are some things that scare you, O.K. Kelly? (Have O.K. Kelly whisper in your ear) 1. A stranger calling on the phone? 2. If you get hurt and dont know what to do. 3. Bad weather? Yes, that can be real scary too. 4. Walking home alone? 5. Introduce yourself to group Observe Bring out puppet O.K. Kelly Raise hands. Pull out a toy phone Pull out first aid kit, open What You Say: What You Do: What Participants Do: 6. Are youre scared of fire? Well, O.K. Kelly, were going to help you handle these fears. Were going to talk about each of these situations. TELEPHONE Lets start by introducing our first guest. Now yall watch and see if you recognize our guest. I know youve probably seen him on Saturday morning cartoons. Here he is. Lets everyone say Hi, Tweety Bird! Can you guess what Tweety Bird wants to talk about? Right. The telephone. Well Tweety Bird, what should you do if the telephone rings? Tweety You should answer it. It might be important. But just say hello. O.K. Kelly What will I do if someone asks for my telephone number? Tweety Never give your number out. Just ask what number they are calling. O.K. Kelly What do I say if they ask to speak to my parents? Tweety Just say they are busy and cant come to the phone right now. NEVER, NEVER SAY YOURE ALONE! O.K. Kelly I have last one question. What if the person sounds scary on the phone? Pull out fire hat and matches Whisper the next sentence to catch kids attention. Pull out Tweety Bird puppet. Have Tweety Bird pick up phone Say hi to Tweety Bird. Respond. Have Tweety Bird and O. K. Kelly puppets talk to each other. What You Say: What You Do: What Participants Do: Tweety Just hang up! O.K. Kelly Thanks Tweety, now I know how to answer the telephone when Im home alone. Boys and girls, theres a page in your O.K. Kelly booklet that you need to go over with your mother or father. It has a place for you to write phone numbers of parents, police, and fire department when you need help. Always keep it near your phone and make sure you know your address and even directions to get to your house. Bring out the Pink Panther puppet. FIRST AID Its time to introduce our next guest so he can show you another surprise. Are you ready? Say hi to the Pink Panther. Have any of you seen him on T.V.? Pink Panther what do you have in your surprise box? Pink Panther Ive made a first aid kit which can be kept in any type of box. Can you tell me which of these items Ill need if I get a cut or scratch? Pink Panther Yes, just wash the area gently with warm, soapy water and put on a bandage. What about a bad bump or bruise? Pink Panther Apply ice or an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the area. Without the towel the cold ice could burn and stick to your fingers. Thats a good point to remember! What do I do if I get a nose bleed? Pink Panther Sit with your head forward, looking down at the ground. Pinch the soft part of the nose together for about ten minutes. Putting a cold pack, or ice in a cloth on the back of the neck and forehead can help sometimes, but it is not usually Open first aid kit. Say hi and respond if they recognize the character. Show soap. Show bandage. Respond and point. What You Say: What You Do: What Participants Do: needed. When it stops clean up the mess (put the blood stained tissues into a bin yourself, so that others dont have to handle your blood). . Your nose will probably feel blocked with blood, and you will want to blow the blood out. Try not to sniff or blow your nose for at least 30 minutes. If it doesnt stop keep pinching the soft part of the nose together. Get some more ice or a colder cold pack and hold it on for another 10 minutes Sucking a piece of ice may help [and at least it helps take the taste of blood out of your mouth.] Get help if the nose is still bleeding after 20 minutes Bring out O. K. Kelly. Pink Panther picks up a flashlight and whispers to O. K. WEATHER Kelly. O.K. Kelly The Pink Panther wants you to discuss another important topic with your parents. Raise your hand if you have ever been frightened by bad weather. We think all of us have at one time or another. When we are having dangerous weather, there are some very important rules for you to follow. Ask your parents where theyd like for you to go in your house if the weather gets too bad. Pink Panther - and always keep a flashlight handy! Stay inside and away from windows in case they get broken. SAFETY O.K. Kelly We have saved our special guest for last. He is called a Crime Dog on T.V. Can anybody guess his name? Heres McGruff the Crime Dog with some safety tips. McGruff Yes, Im here to help you Take a Bite Out of Crime. I want you to be safe while youre walking home or going into an empty house by remembering 3 basic safety rules. 1. Dont ever go near a strangers car. Pull out McGruff and parade around to show the children. Put Pink Panther away and take out McGruff. What You Say: What You Do: What Participants Do: 2. Always keep the door locked when you are home alone. 3. Do not let anyone in unless your parents say its O.K. FIRE O.K. Kelly Our last topic is very important one because McGruff knows that every year boys and girls get burned or killed because of something very dangerous. McGruff Yes, boys and girls were talking about fire. All of you know NEVER to play with matches, but do you know what to do if theres an accident and your clothes catch fire? If your clothes catch fire, first STOP, then DROP, then ROLL. Watch me STOP, DROP and then ROLL. This will put the fire out. If you run, the fire will only get bigger and burn you more. O.K. Kelly Help me remember this important slogan by saying it with me. STOP! DROP! ROLL! Now go home today and teach this to your parents because many adults dont even know this. CONCLUSION O.K. Kelly Our time with you is up for today. Promise O.K. Kelly that youll tell your parents what you learned today. They will be so proud of you because you know so many safety rules and can now handle some emergencies. Goodbye, Boys and Girls Stay Safe Pick up fire hat. May have to put O. K. Kelly away for the time being as you pick up props. Put hat down and pick up matches. McGruff demonstrates. Put McGruff away temporarily and bring out O. K. Kelly. Repeat after O. K. Kelly, STOP, DROP, and ROLL! Pink Panther McGruff Tweety Bird
