Coursework GIS Description Dan Cornford Date Due: 23/3/2009 Module: CS3210 Module Assessment Percentage: 30% Introduction The aim of this piece of coursework is several fold. I want you to become familiar with the application of GIS to real world problems, I want you to have some practical experience of the limitations associated with the application of GIS to real world problems and I want you to do some independent thinking and research on the topic you have chosen. The basic premise is that you have been given the task of investigating either: the development of a new supermarket, or; the construction of a new cycle path. You will nd a small amount of extra information on the GIS coursework page on the GIS Wiki. This contains links to a considerable amount of data and some useful sites. Your task is to choose one of the above topics and perform a complete GIS investigation into this topic. This includes a simple background survey of how one other researcher has addressed this kind of problem in the past. The coursework can be pursued in two ways: As an individual, in which case you will be assessed using the following criteria: review of a current method / approach, using the library or www (10%) context independent thought about, and analysis of, your topic (15%) requirements description of the method you used in GRASS to answer the problem (25%) design and implementation evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the methods you have used and the conclusions you have reached (25%) evaluation and conclusion extra marks available for evidence of the use of novel or innovative methods within GRASS, the analysis or the evaluation (20%) presentation (5%) The literature review will be expected to cover at least 1 reference which relates to the problem you have chosen to answer. As a pair, in which case you will be assessed using the following criteria. review of current methods / approaches, using the library or www (10%) context independent thought about, and analysis of, your topic (15%) requirements description of both methods you used in GRASS to answer the problem (25%) design and implementation evaluation, and comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of the two methods you have used and the conclusions you have reached (25%) evaluation and conclusion extra marks available for evidence of the use of novel or innovative methods within GRASS, the analysis or the evaluation (20%) presentation (5%) The literature review will be expected to cover at least 2 dierent references, with a slightly greater degree of study into the application. The crucial dierence is that in the paired coursework you are expected to present two dierent GRASS solutions to the problem, and contrast the results that they produce, as well as evaluating the approaches overall. I will allow the pairs to an provide assessment of their relative contributions, by including a statement at the end of the report as to the balance of work. In the case of disputes, I will interview the pair individually to ensure equity. If no statement is made I will assume an even set of marks. All work will be marked out of 100. For paired work both will be allocated (most likely equal) marks out of 100. 2 CS3210 GIS Coursework Description If you intend to undertake the assessment as a pair, you must register this intent with me, by both sending an email to me (d.cornford@aston.ac.uk) by 27th of February 2009, with the names of both members of the pair. Anyone submitting paired work who did not register will receive half marks! This piece of coursework, should take around 30 hours to complete. It is worth 30% of the course marks. You should not take the marking schemes as completely xed, since I also like to look at the work as a whole how well it ts together and reads which may aect the nal marks given. The submitted work should consist of a report, on your chosen topic (I strongly advise you to choose one very quickly and stick to it). This report should read well and should address the above issues in a clear and analytic way. Try not to wae I suggest a length of 5 to 7 pages for individual submissions, with 7 being the upper limit, and 6 to 10 pages for paired submissions, with 10 being the upper limit which includes all gures and other detail. Include gures from GRASS where relevant, since these really are worth a thousand words in GIS based investigations, and do not use font sizes of less than 10 points. Be precise in your writing, structure it well and use gures appropriately. You should de...
