IA KCCI.com, 03/21/06 Sources: McDermott To Be Named New ISU Coach Iowa State Plans To Make Official Announcement DES MOINES, Iowa -- Sources have told NewsChannel 8 that Greg McDermott of Northern Iowa will be named Iowa State University's new men's basketball coach. Iowa State University Athletic Director Jamie Pollard isn't wasting any time replacing fired head basketball coach Wayne Morgan. Athletic department spokesman Tom Kroeschell said the university has scheduled a news conference for 6 p.m. Tuesday to announce the hiring of a new coach. Pollard has interviewed two candidates -- Rob Jeter of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and McDermott. Jeter, who interviewed Monday, said Tuesday morning he will stay at UWMilwaukee. By process of elimination, that puts UNI's McDermott at the head of the list. University of Northern Iowa athletic director Rick Hartzell would not confirm deny or that McDermott is leaving for ISU. However, NewsChannel 8 has learned that McDermott has a noon meeting scheduled with his players. Sources have told NewsChannel 8 that UNI will name its assistant coach Ben Jacobson to the head coaching spot. McDermott has taken the UNI Panthers to the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons. Iowa State said fans and students are invited to this evening's 6 p.m. introduction of the new head coach. Fans should enter Hilton Coliseum through the south doors. The pep band and Cy will be in attendance. The Cyclones fired Morgan and his staff last Friday in the wake of the failure to reach postseason play, as well as a reported recruiting scam. Morgan also has a news conference planned for 1:30 p.m. in Ames to tell his side of the story. Stay tuned to KCCI News Channel 8 and KCCI.com for updates on this developing story.
