to How Make a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Training 101 By: Brian Khoury & Shannah Budenbender Outline Pretest and Evaluation History Nutritional Facts Types Other Facts Things you will Need Making the PB&J Summary Questions History Who invented the PB&J sandwich? Was it the Cavemen??? History They look legitimate History Do we have a winner? History NO!!!! History Invented by: Dr. Ambrose W. Straub U.S. Military Bread and jelly have been around for millennia History 1880 Patients with Bad Teeth Since patients could not eat meat, Dr. Straub invented nutritional supplement in crushed up peanuts 1904 Peanut Butter and Jelly was beginning to be sold in grocery stores in bulk 1941-1945 Military food rations begin to include peanut butter. Soldiers add jelly for better taste Nutritional Facts "Traditional Style" -two slices of white bread -two tablespoons peanut butter -two tablespoons grape jelly: PB&J Nutritional Facts: Fat: 18 grams Sodium: 500 milligrams Carbohydrates: 59 grams Protein: 12 grams Fiber: 3 grams Calories: 432 Recommended Intake: Fat: 66 grams Sodium: 2,300 mg Carbohydrates: 250 grams Protein: 75 grams Fiber: 26 to 38 grams Calories: 2000 Nutritional Facts One "Traditional" PB&J: 27% of a day's fat 23% of a day's sodium 24% of a day's carbohydrates 16% of a day's protein 13% of a days fiber 22% of a day's calories Nutritional Facts Alternative 1. One slice of 100% whole grain bread 2. 1 tablespoon strawberry spread (no sugar, only fruit & juice) 3. 1 tablespoon of reducedfat peanut butter Nutritional Facts alternative grams fat milligrams sodium grams carbohydrates grams protein grams fiber calories 6 220 25 7 3 193 traditional 18 500 59 12 3 432 This PB and J has fewer calories and less fat with the smaller portion size. However, the whole grain bread still contains three grams of fiber. Peanut Butter and Jelly Shapes or Crustless Sandwiches Fried Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches Toasted Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches with: Honey Butter Brown or Powder Sugar Marshmallow Fluff Fresh Fruit Slices Extra Butter Peanut or Extra Jelly Honey Types Other Facts What is the difference between jelly, jam, and preserves? Other Facts JELLY: Made from fruit juice. Jelly is clear and firm enough to hold its shape when turned out of its container. JAM: Made from a blend of crushed pieces of fruit and fruit puree. PRESERVES: Contains whole or large pieces of fruit, making them thicker and more fruit-filled than jams or jellies. Strawberry, Grape and Raspberry are the mainstays but many others are available. My most frequent choice is strawberry, grape is a fun change of pace. I like raspberry well enough but having seeds stuck between my teeth is a drag. The other aspect is the texture since I consider Jelly, Jam and Preserves to all be valid ingredients. If someone suggests marmalade, just say NO. Other Facts What type of Peanut Butter is there? Other Facts Types of Peanut Butter: Creamy Chunky Fresh ground Organic varieties Things You Will Need to Make PB&J Sandwich Necessary Items: Knife (dull) Plate Napkin S Bread Jelly/Jam Peanut Butter Making the PB&J Step 1: Gather all items mentioned in previous slide Step 2: Grab 2 slices of (matching) bread Making the PB&J Step 3: Lay slices of bread on a flat plate Step 4: Open peanut butter with hands.
