Oil Algae Date: 04/13/07 Author: Kyle Sander Team Members: Leah Kimura, Colette Griffith, Kyle Sander Previous Week Accomplishments This last week Kyle built both of the tube reactors and found a material to be used for the bag reactor. The team has decided to use the algae dunaliella instead of chlorella. We still plan on having our second strain be isochrysis. We have ordered both of these strains. We ordered the dunaliella from UTEX and the isochrysis from the University of Hawaii. We also ordered 2 liters of growth media. Colette also purchased all of the needed chemicals and other supplies we will need to make growth media. Leah began constructing our projects website. We have also acquired two gas canisters from the ChE department. Worked Planned for Upcoming Week This next week we plan on receiving our algae and media. We need to be prepared to make several cultures of the algae we receive in different flasks. These will be reserve/new start culture for if and when a culture dies. We have made a goal of getting all four reactors inoculated and running by Friday of this upcoming week. We still have some minor equipment setting up to do on top of getting our algae culture prepared. We would like also to arrange some lab time with Dr. Yokochi so he can show us how to make some culture media from a recipe we've decided to slightly modify. We also must still construct the two bag reactors. Though we have acquired our gas, we need to contact Airgas or Industrial Welding Supplies to see about getting more later on. Issues We have a lot of work to do if we are to meet our goal of four reactors up and running by Friday. We would like to schedule some lab time with Dr. Yokochi and have him help us with our media recipe. It's no secret professors are very busy people and squeezing an hour out of his day that will work for all four of us (team members and Yokochi) may be a problem. No other prominent specific...
