These advanced projects are designed for immediate application to meet current demands in most business, marketing, advertising, and design situations. spring 09 caryn esplin spori 231 208.496.1831 208.339.3395 esplinc@byui.edu This course is designed for students with intermediate and advanced visual media experience. Successful completion of Comm 130 Visual Media is required. Comm 497R Custom Images is recommended, though not a required prerequisite. Students use state-of-the-art Apple computers and software in a hands-on classroom-lab environment ideal for active learning. For example, students will discuss, analyze, and share the principles of effective web design in a group setting, then immediately incorporate their understanding as they practice the related skill set. Students will often have class time to work on assigned projects where the instructor and TA are available for assistance and critique. Detailed project guides, sample projects, written and video tutorials, along with evaluation forms are available in I-Learn. Course materials are also available for download through iTunes University via a link in I-Learn. overview Advanced Visual Media learners will achieve the following learning outcomes: 1. Create advanced print, web, and digital projects including: self-portrait collage, product redesign, photodesign study, video podcast, and portfolio website. 2. Design and publish a 12+page personal FTP website, including advanced site mapping and roll-overs to present projects consistent with the principles of effective design. 3. Actively experience visual communication and technology tools while working in creative teams to design, critique, and evaluate marketing case studies. 4. Analyze and apply principles and concepts in effective web design, print design, typography, presentations, image editing, advertising, and podcasting. 5. Achieve mastery skills in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe DreamWeaver, Adobe Fireworks, iTunes, GarageBand, and iMovie. 6. Apply advanced online, technology, and presentation skills with the Macintosh operating system and included applications. 7. Acquire the latest visual media and design expertise to facilitate quality employment. 8. Preparation points are awarded for submitting activities before class, participating in group critiques and discussions during class. Students who miss class must obtain the missed information from another student. More than five absences may result in course failure. All work is due at the beginning of class, and late work will not be accepted. For a planned absence, projects must be completed before the deadline and left under the instructors door, Spori 231, and/or submitted online, per the respective requirements. deadlines To help compensate for computer or personal emergencies, students are allowed a mulligan, which allows them to submit an assignment two days late without a reduction in points. This mulligan may not be used on the website final critique or presentation. Students need to notify the instructor before the deadline in order to use the mulligan. mulligans Students are expected to observe the BYU-Idaho Honor Code. All work must be original.
