Peabody The Chamber Camp Camp This is a one week intensive chamber music program for string players in grades 5 12 at the IntermediateAdvanced levels. Designed to educate the total musician, the curriculum combines focused study of a chamber work with the opportunity to explore parallel disci plines. The inclusion of Latin Based and other Ballroom dance classes will enhance musi cianship through the art of leading and fol lowing, non verbal communication, and will encourage freedom of movement as well as strengthen the students sense of rhythm and listening. Each faculty member will lead an Enrichment class on the creative topic of his or her choice. Chamber music coaching will focus on musicianship and effective rehearsal techniques as the groups prepare for the final concert. She earned her undergraduate degree at Duke University and a Masters Degree in cello performance from the University of Southern California. While living in Seattle, she was a member of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra and played with the Seattle Opera and Symphony. She is an active freelancer and a member of the Baltimore-based chamber group, gliss! Rebecca Henry, a faculty member of the Peabody Conservatory, the Peabody Preparatory and the Indiana University Summer String Academy. She is a founding member of the Kegelstatt Trio and has performed in chamber festivals in the US, Mexico, and Switzerland. Her former violin and viola students are performing and teaching around the world. Matthew Horwitz-Lee; Violin; String Ensemble Conductor; faculty, Peabody Preparatory and the Bryn Mawr School. Mr. Horwitz-Lee co-directed the Strings program in the Westboro Public School system near Boston. He holds violin performance degrees from Rice University and the University of Maryland, College Park. He studied Latin based dance and ballroom dance for 3 years in Cambridge, MA with the nationally renowned dance team Hips on Fire and currently studies ballroom at the Promenade Dancesport Facility in Baltimore. Melissa Hullman, a violin/viola faculty member at the Peabody Preparatory and Past President of the MD/DC American String Teachers Association. She was executive director and chamber music faculty at Strings on the Pond at the University of Michigan, and co-taught gifted high school students at the Meadowmount School. She has performed throughout the US as a classical and improvising musician. Christian Tremblay studied violin in Qubec City and was awarded the Priz du Conservatoire de Musique du Qubec in 1998. He received a Graduate Performance Diploma in 2000 from the Peabody Conservatory and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the same institution in 2004. He has most recently been heard as a recitalist and chamber musician in Ottawa; Qubec; Montral,Baltimore, NewYork;Washington,D.C.;Alkmaar(Netherlands); Fontainebleau(France); and Singapore. He is a faculty member of the Peabody Institute, teaching violin for the Preparatory and music history at the Conservatory. Application Information Tuition $450 Tuition is due in full with application. Acceptance is based on audition, which may be live, via DVD/VHS tape, or on CD. Memorization and piano accompaniment are not required. Returning students should audition! Audition Requirem ents: 1) A 2 or 3 octave scale (students choice of key) with 4 eighth notes per bow, legato (quarter note = 72) and in spicatto (one bow per note). 2) Two pieces of contrasting tempos or styles. Group classes will provide the opportunity to refine ensemble skills, perform for others, review and polish known songs, and learn new songs from outside of the Suzuki repertoire. Enrichment classes have included such topics as dance, art and world instruments, and are designed to enhance the creative spirit of the camp. Note-reading and theory are important topics for all musicians, and our classes will be divided by age level and will be taught through ear-training, music games and written work, away from the instruments. Our orchestra experience will include pieces for students in Suzuki Books 1-4. There will be full orchestra and sectional rehearsals throughout the week. Group classes and the orchestra will perform on Friday, August 17 at 3pm. Faculty Janet Melnicoff-Brown, is the Camp Allegro Director and the Coordinator of the Young Peoples String Program at the Peabody Preparatory where she teaches violin. Ms. Melnicoff-Brown received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Vermont and her MMEd., from the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She has had pedagogy training in numerous Suzuki Institutes including Stevens Point, Wisconson and Catholic University, where she studied most recentlywith John Kendall. She studied Roland pedagogy with Dr. Marla Mutschler at Laval University, and has also participated in Music Learning Theory Seminars with Dr. Edwin Gordon at Tample University. She has performed as a freelance musician in Vermont and Baltimore area orchestras and chamber groups. Elizabeth Faidley, Camp Allegro Assistant Director, recently completed a Master of Music in violin performance and pedagogy at Peabody, studying with Shirley Givens. Currently she is a faculty member of both the Peabody Preparatory and Conservatory. In the Preparatory, she teaches private and group violin. In the Conservatory, she teaches the string methods class for music education majors. She received her Bachelor of Arts in American Language and Literature and in Violin Performance from the University of Tennessee. She taught violin and group classes for the Cadek Conservatory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she also founded and directed a summer violin camp. She has attended Suzuki Pedagogy Institutes in South Carolina and Wisconsin.
