When he is not subdued by their bullets, they run because they are frightened by their inability to kill him. The man represents all of the families, similar to the one described, are that torn apart unjustly. Similar to many other stories in this collection, Bencastro incorporates the theme of justice, and those who deserve to be punished face the consequences they deserve.
