Books Informational vs. Biographies
Name: Megan Salley Population: 4th Grade Subject/Content Area/Topic: Language Arts- the differences in informational books and biographies Time: 45-60 minutes Materials: One short read-aloud informational book and biography. In this particular lesson, the informational book used is, Whos Feet Are These? by Wayne Lynch and the biography George Washingtons Teeth by Deborah Chandra and Madeleine Comora. The teacher should also have 4-6 additional informational books and biographies. Popsicle sticks, di-cuts of the letters I and B, and glue. The letter I and B should be glued to the tops of the Popsicle sticks. There should be enough for each student to have one of each. One 8 x 11 piece of construction paper. Objectives: The student will be able to identify an informational book. The student will be able to identify a biography. The student will be able to compare and contrast informational books and biographies. Rationale: (12) Reading/text structures/literacy concepts. The student analyzes the characteristics of various types of texts (genres). The student is expected to: (C) identify the purposes of different types of texts such as to inform, influence, express, or entertain (D) recognize the distinguishing features of genres, including biography, historical fiction, informational texts, and poetry Anticipatory Set: There will be a basket of books on each students desk containing a mixture of informational books and biographies. The students are expected to sort through the collection of books and find out what their similarities and differences are. The class will then discuss the types of books they think they have at their desks. Then the teacher can introduce the biographies and the informational books they have sorted. Instructional Input: The teacher will read-aloud two books of her choice. In this case, the books are Whos Feet Are Those, and George Washingtons Teeth. As both books are being read, the and students the teacher will work together to identify similarities and differences between informational books and biographies. The similarities and difference will be recorded on a Venn diagram. After students feel comfortable, and are aware of the differences, the class will move on to the next activity.
Modeling: The teacher is leading the class discussion in finding similarities and differences between informational books and biographies. The teacher will also write down the class discussion on a Venn diagram in front of the class for future reference. Checking for understanding: The teacher will check for understanding during the discussion of similarities and differences of each book. The similarities and differences will be recorded on a Venn diagram. The teacher will also check for understanding when the class is participating in the guided practice portion of the lesson. Guided Practice: The teacher will pass out an I Popsicle stick and a B Popsicle stick to each student. The teacher holds up either an example of an informational book or a biography.
