SCRIPT RECRUITMENT - for phone conversation with potential Group 2 participants (St't'imcets speakers) Hi ____________, how are you? I'm calling to see if you might want to participate in a new study I'm conducting titled "The perception of speech sounds". I am asking you to participate in this study because you are a fluent speaker of St't'imcets. Since we have already worked together on various projects, we have a pre-existing relationship. This relationship does not obligate you in any way to participate in this new study. Please be assured that there is no pressure intended; participation is entirely your choice. The purpose of this study is to understand how speakers of St't'imcets perceive a set of sounds termed `laryngealized sonorants'. These sounds are written with an apostrophe in the orthography; they are sonorous sounds like English l but pronounced with a "catch in the throat" termed laryngealization. If you agree to participate in this study, your participation will include listening to several pronunciations of words laryngealized containing sonorants and deciding which pronunciations sound the best to you. The listening activity will take place in your home, or in some other location convenient for you (e.g. the St't'imcets language centre) and will take approximately one hour to complete. The potential benefit of your participation is that we (you included!) will learn more about how St't'imcets sounds are pronounced. This will help us to design appropriate materials for teaching the sounds of the language.
