REQUIRED TEXT: Human Resource Management: Gaining a Competitive Advantage (4th Edition) Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, and Wright McGraw-Hill/Irwin 2003 Additional readings will be assigned throughout the semester. Class Schedule: The class will normally meet on Wednesdays (2:30 pm to 3:45 pm) and Fridays (8:00 am to 9:15 am) in Room 1420 WARF building, although on occasion we will have to meet elsewhere in the WARF building. The WARF street address is 610 Walnut Street located at the corner of Walnut and Observatory Drive. The first class will be held Friday, September 3.
Location:
The course will meet in the WARF Building. Most of the classes will be in Room 1420 WARF. Some classes will be held in Room 132 WARF as announced. Class room locations for the semester will be provided at the first class session.
COURSE OVERVIEW: This is an introductory course in the management of human resources, designed for engineering students. A major part of the course will be devoted to performance measurement in the organization. Other human resource management functions studied include job analysis, staffing, and compensation. We will also focus on how external market, public policy, and technological forces interact with business strategies and managerial values in shaping human resource management policies and practices, both in the presence and absence of unions and collective bargaining. The course will examine human resource topics from both a theoretical/systems perspective and a practical look at the human resource issues in organizations. The primary focus will be on human resource management in the health sector, although the concepts and examples will have applicability across industries. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADES: The primary method of instruction will be class lectures and discussions, supplemented by discussion of specific cases, and guest lecturers. Cases may sometimes be scheduled for discussion in class and students are expected to come prepared to discuss them. 1
The course grade will be based on three inputs: Two exams Homework assignments or Group individual Project (40% of the grade, 20% for each exam) (30% of the grade) (30% of the grade)
The exams will both be a combination of objective (i.e., true/false, multiple choice) and subjective (i.e., short answer and essay) questions. Two or three homework assignments will be given throughout the semester. The project or paper may be done in conjunction with other students or by the student individually. The project/paper assignment will be discussed in class. Class participation will be used to determine grades that are at the margin.
