Forestry Community (NR254/ENVS196) 2/25/02 What is expected in the Project Proposal? The final project proposal will be similar to a grant or research proposal, except that it will likely not have budget numbers. (Because we do not have any money to give you alas!) But you will need some resources so you might want to do a "budget page" of sorts. The purpose of the proposal is to describe an issue, problem, research question, and/or practical need in sufficient depth, and nested in the key issues of relevance to the funder/authorizer (i.e. why it is worth doing), why you would be a good person to do it (something about your interests and skills), and resources needed to get it done (including a preliminary bibliography). If a group project, you should list all of the principal investigators and, to the extent possible, the roles each will play. Target length: 4-5 pages (longer if you need it) An outline would look like: (top page) 1. Title 2. Principal Investigators (or Project Participants if it is not very researchy) 3. Project summary brief paragraph of what you intend to do (body) 4. Project Justification the "Funnel essay" situate your issue/project in a larger problem/question of relevance to this course, community forestry, greater national and world dilemmas (e.g. deforestation, biodiversity, world hunger, economic injustice, etc) or trends (e.g. decentralization, privatization, collaborative processes, etc.) 5. Project Description -- (what you will do and produce) Should include a) the central question or activity and b) project outputs (paper, website, video, annotated bibliography, etc.). Indicate approximate expected page number of written outputs (--to be with negotiated me!) 6. Methods and Resources to be utilized in carrying out this project. (How you will do it.) How do you plan to work together (e.g. weekly meetings somewhere in Aiken, assign tasks and work independently until the last weekend, etc.); what that work consists of (e.g. field interviews, library research, visit a particular place, etc.); and how and where you intend to secure resources (get help from Jessica Dion or CTL for website; ask Laurie Kutner for help in library web searches; use expertise of group members, etc.). You may just want to make a list of resources. (info at end) 7. Budget / Resources page or list. (optional) If you need any special resources, e.g. a designated web page address, transportation, technical help this is where you list it and indicate how it will be obtained. If you need help with something in particular, this is a place to ask. 8. References -- both the articles, books, websites, and people referred to in this proposal AND a preliminary bibliography of sources you anticipate you will consult. 9. List of Principal Investigators with some info about each one. Don't need a resume, but a least a couple of lines indicating academic major and special skills, interests and/or experiences each person brings to this project. You should also include, as accurately as possible, the role each person will play. You can also list Key Collaborators for people who are not in your group who may be helping you extensively. If you are working on your own, you can omit this section IF you adequately cover elsewhere why you in particular want to do this project and what skills, interests and resources you bring to it. Due date: March 28, 2002
