Education General Committee Approved Minutes August 22, 2006 Present: Ron Nickerson, Jim Rife, Kellian Clink, Gretta Handke, Brandon Cooke (email cooke@mnsu.edu, not the email for the student with the identical name) I. Call to Order & Welcome A. We were happy to see one another and welcomed Brandon Cooke to our committee. We will keep Dick apprised of our goings-on through email since he will rejoin the committee after his sabbatical. II. Old Business A. We will check on the status of our committee members for this year. We will not know the deans assigned to our committee for a week or so. III. New Business A. Administrators to liaise with include Dr. Avra Johnson and Dr. Brenda Flannery, who will both be working with our committee. B. Look for Gen Ed Appeals in your mailbox. C. Meetings will be at 2 on Wednesdays, barring any scheduling conflicts with the administrators. Gretta will check a few possibilities for rooms. D. We anticipate meeting the 3rd Wednesday of each month for the Sub Meet & Confers. IV. Discussion of Goals for 2006-2007 A. Continue to review course proposals and student appeals. B. Implement Projects, CETL including the General Education Learning Community (Ron & Gretta), a reception for new faculty where we talk about the general education coursework criteria (Ron), & a session for the mentoring program (Kellian). Ron will send a letter to new faculty and department chairs with the general education pages referenced from the Undergraduate Bulletin along with the website of General Education Assessment materials on the university s website. C. Sort through and excerpt the most essential historical materials from the General education curriculum boxes Gretta has in her office, and get Daardi Sizemore s help in deciding the retention of the materials. D. Continue Assessment Process, including I (1a Gretta, 1b Jim, 1c Kellian sheparding). Details that Ron will check into include copy cards and payment for GECCIG service. When we know the second item, we will proceed with the first gathering of faculty in categories. E. Ongoing project with Categories 7 & 8. The idea was proposed and enthusiastically endorsed to ask departments to send all Spring 2007 syllabi for our review. Ron will draft a letter.
