Pruski Zach Reflections Assignment 6/25/07 2. By far, the most difficult part about reading a text book is concentration. This goes with "Passivity is the greatest enemy". I am a very energetic person; I am the type of person who can work a 9-5 job at full capacity all day. As soon as I sit in front of a text book, my eyes begin to droop and/or my mind begins to wander aimlessly. Try as I may to gradually bring my mind back, it gets more difficult by the page. Comprehension is not an immense dilemma with me. I can usually understand the content with ease. Vocabulary is even less of a problem. I competed two years in U.I.L. Spelling and Vocabulary and am very thankful that I did. I can also just as easily use the context clues fairly well to guide myself among difficult text. But back to the real problem, concentration. I have found that if I read in sections of the book, and take a small look around break, I can more easily focus on what I am reading. Ironically by distracting myself from reading, I can come back with more focus than if I were to try to read twenty to thirty pages at a time. Another method I have found to eliminate passivity is from taking Dr. Kathleen Speed's advice in walking while I read. By moving around, I can more easily focus on the text by eliminating passivity. With the passivity eliminated, it keeps me from dozing off at the turn of a page. Other methods of ensuring I can concentrate are to rid of any distractions. Such distractions include music, hunger, cellular phone, and computer. By making sure I eat enough and turning off the outside world, my concentration is fixed to one particular thing. It gives me a way to focus on the one thing that requires focus. So in using these simple strategies, I can more easily relive myself of my biggest problem in reading, concentration. Zach Pruski Reflections Assignment 6/25/07 1. Two self practices that seem most important to me and most important to succeed are "To practice self-acceptance" and "To practice self-assertiveness". In both of these ways am I able to respect myself and to show my colors as they are and not in someone else's view. I can be who I really am and be happy with it. For me to practice self acceptance is sometimes frustrating. Due to a long line of catastrophic events in my life, I have evolved into having a very direct personality. I am the person who a friend can come to for an honest opinion and unequivocal advice. For instance, I was voted "Most Dependable" my senior year in high school. But it is sometimes frustrating meeting people for the first time. I come off with a very strong personality not holding back my opinions beliefs and thoughts. Given the chance, I am one of the most understanding and willing persons for a friend. I am always generous and am a lifeline for friends. I believe this is important in being me because there is no misunderstanding in who I am. Another very important builder of self-esteem for me is to practice selfassertiveness. I am confident enough in my ability to be who I am. I have engaged in so many different activities that I feel comfortable around a variety of people. Bull riding, boxing, high school band, rock and country music bands and even a hunting guide are all some of the hats I have worn. With these skills and learned attributes, anyone can see why I have such a strong personality. It is because I am very comfortable with myself and others in whatever their interests are. I can so easily relate myself to another person through one of these vistas. With a high self-esteem, I can easily recover a missed step and recover. This is important in that I can go into my studying and know that I will be able to succeed. Between these two practices, I know I can be the best friend anyone can ever have just given the chance. Zach Pruski Reflections Assignment 6/25/07 7. Due to an increased level of stress, I believe it is very important to have quality time with people you can relax around. Weather they are your friends, pets or family, around being someone you can be yourself with is essential. I have a daily ritual in which I wake up and go to class at 8:20 AM. I get out of class at 9:30. In between classes to relive my mind to start anew at ten thirty, I talk with my classmates, send an email or sit with my friends to converse. My second class ends at eleven thirty five. After this class, several of my peers all decide on a place to eat and we go eat lunch together. In this time, we tell jokes, stories with each other and discuss class. This is so important to me to wind down before I study and to relive myself of all my extra energy. It leaves me with a feeling of being full and ready to accomplish something. It may only be an hour or two at most that I spend in between and after class but it is imperative to me to maintain a healthy mind setting. I hope that when I grow older, this routine is still in my quality world. That is to be able to get together for lunch during work and go have some quality time with those I care about. It is overall relaxing and can really take off a mental burden. As far as academics go, this routine definitely resolves the excuse of not having time with your friends. I go to lunch with them on a daily basis to spend time chatting about nonsense. But if nonsense is what helps me get a better sense of learning, then overall I see it as academically progressive. The ability to go spend time with a stress reducer is definitely a superior way to step into studying. After having some substantial time to myself, I can spend the appropriate time to my studies. Zach Pruski Reflections Assignment 6/25/07 5. My personality type is ENFJ. On page 214 it states, "Exhibits high standards of promptness, rarely procrastinating unless in situational difficulties, usually concerning a relationship", I believe this to be fairly true. I for the most part am very prompt about turning in assignments. Lately however, I have fallen into a furrow of bad habits due to some internal problems at home. One of the reasons I procrastinate is from feeling insubordinate in my study habits. This would fall under the, "I'll do it later" category. I often sit down at the MSC, read the chapter and afterwards am unsure on what exactly to study and learn. When I do study I can effectively learn the required material but I obviously am showing some of the dualistic learning strategies. In some instances it seems as if I need the teacher or "higher authority' to tell me what to learn. Another major reason for my procrastination is "Inappropriate Commitments". I would much rather relax with my friends than study. Every student I'm sure faces this dilemma. Some know how to cope with it very well, others do not. I feel that I have begun to see what changes need to be made for me to be a competent learner and to succeed in the college atmosphere. In all actuality, you can have just as much fun in one hour with your friends as with three hours. This is only because that one hour would be so much more rewarding after two hours of studying. With the summer Gateway Program, failure is not an option. Studying is one of the keys to success. I have taken a day or so to look upon myself and have realized I have fallen into some bad habits. My parents at home are going through a divorce and this has really put an emotional impact on me to where I feel helpless. I have been so stressed out over this problem that it has been making me sick. Along with my sister causing many problems for my parents that seem unbearable. I saw that if these things get to me, there will be no way to keep my head on straight and for me to learn effectively. I have chosen to overlook these problems mainly because, one, they are interfering with my ability to learn, two, there is nothing I can do about the situations and three, if I get so bothered that I cannot perform, I fail. With some dire changes in effect, I have already noticed a change in my performance when I sit down to study. It only takes some will power to overcome procrastination.
