His most famous piece was the "Maple Leaf Rag" The Blues: began as vocal music influenced by African American spirituals and work songs. Its typical form is 12 bars of AAB with specific chord progression. Some Famous Blues Singers were Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday "Lady Day" and Sarah Vaughan. A famous song is "Florida Bound Blues" sung by Bessie Smith. New Orleans Dixieland- it was developed in New Orleans the first two decades of the 20th century in the Storyville area then moved heavily into Chicago around the 1920's. It contains a high energy steady underlying beat. The "Front Line" consists of trumpet, clarinet and trombone with simultaneous improvisation. The rhythm section is usually the piano, banjo, guitar, bass and drums. Some famous artists are Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke, and Louis Armstrong. Swing and Big Band- It was very popular in the 1930's and 1940's for dancing and listening. It was played on radio and was the first on recording. There were usually 1220 players in 3 sections, the rhythm was piano, guitar, bass and drums. The woodwinds were saxophones and clarinet. The brass consisted of trumpet and trombones. Some of the famous artists were Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and the Dorsey Brothers. Bebop- was very popular in the 1940's. It had a very high energy but with a smaller ensemble. There were very complex solo improvisations. The popular artists of this time were Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk, Kenny Clark, Max Roach, Gene Krupa, Charlie Parker and Mary Lou Williams.
