It is contributing not only to a hefty electricity bill but also to our personal contribution to greenhouse pollution and climate change. A simple way to change these habits is to ensure that all computers and laptops are shutdown after work hours switch off before you take off! And don't forget to switch off your computer monitor as well. Consider this: A computer left on 24 hours per day 7 days per week costs about $85 per year to run while a computer only left on during working hours costs about $19 per year to run. At UWA if every computer was left on 24/7 this would amount to $710,000 in electricity costs! Greenhouse gas emissions from computers left on all day every day at the University would amount to the equivalent of 1,100 cars on the road annually! For the peasant class, the Bastille stood as a symbol of the hypocrisy and corruption of the aristocratic government controlled mostly by nobility and clergy. This important event marked the entry of the popular class into the French Revolution. The French recognise Bastille Day as the end of the monarchy and beginning of the modern republic. The lasting significance of the event was in its recognition that power could be held by ordinary citizens, not in the King or in God. South Africa is a vibrant and exciting country of enormous diversity. This variety is reflected in their food and wines. The University Club in association with Nederberg Wines is delighted to take members on a culinary journey to South Africa. The Dutch East India Company and its search for spices introduced the first of many cultural influences to have shaped modern South Africa. First came indentured labour from Java who introduced the Malay cuisine, followed by the French Huguenots who brought their vines. Indian indentured labourers introduced by sugar farmers brought their own cultural influences; British and German immigrants also added to this rich cultural mix. Indigenous black South Africans continued with their traditional diet of game and root vegetable. Today the resultant kaleidoscope applies not only to the people but also to the food. Priya competed for the first time in the National Wheelchair Games winning a staggering nine gold medals. In her first international competition, the Barcelona Paralympics in 1992, Priya won three gold and two silver medals, broke two world records and three Paralympic records the most medals of any Australian athlete at the Games. As a result she was given the honour of carrying the flag for Australia at the closing ceremony. On arriving back in Australia she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her services to sport, and became an Australia Day Ambassador. At the 10th Paralympic Games in Atlanta, Priya led the charge for Australia winning five gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal, as well as setting three world records and five Paralympic records. She was also selected to captain the entire Australian Paralympic team, and once again won the highest number of medals of any Australian athlete. In 1999 Priya was named Young Australian of the Year for Sport, winning the award over other major sporting stars such as Pat Rafter and Ian Thorpe who were also finalists in the Sports category of this prestigious award. Priya spent almost two years in Sydney prior to Sydney 2000 Paralympics to concentrate on her training and lifelong goal of winning gold for her country, in her country. Despite recovering from major shoulder surgery, Priya achieved her aim and in October 2000 won a gold medal in the 400m Freestyle and three bronze medals in other events.
