Gryna, Quality Planning & Analysis for Enterprise Quality. 5th Edition, McGraw Hill, 2007. ISBN-13 978-0-07-296662-6. ISBN-10 0-07-296662-9 Additional Text: Evans and Lindsay, The Management and Control of Quality 7th Edition, Thompson South-western, 2008. ISBN 13: 978-0-324-38227-3. ISBN 10: 0-324-382278 Prerequisites: QA6602 Total Quality Course Description: The development of the quality organization, systems, and procedures necessary for effective participation in world markets. Creating and documenting methods and procedures is stressed. Objective: In this class, students will learn about the development of the quality organization, systems, and procedures necessary for effective participation in world markets. We will examine quality aspects of supply chains, manufacturing, service operations, health systems, education systems and government operations. Specific learning objectives: How to develop a quality culture Evaluate the conditions of self-control for workers Demonstrate an understanding of the important applications of Quality in o Supply Chain Management o Manufacturing o Service Operations o Health Care o Education o Government Additionally, we will reinforce concepts from QA 6602: Understand the relationship between quality, productivity, costs, cycle time and value How to assess quality, including quality costs How to identify and solve sporadic and chronic quality problems Understand the managerial concepts of the six-sigma approach Understand the relationship between quality planning and sales income for an organization: customer loyalty and satisfaction Understand the concept of quality control, including establishing measurement and standards, and taking action on the difference Assignments: Reading: Students are expected to read the text or articles and to remain current with the classroom presentations and assigned readings. Attendance: Attendance in the weekly WebCT or Horizon Live chat is strongly encouraged. Speakers and a microphone will be required for the Horizon Live chats. Generally students who participate and keep current with the course progress perform better on the exams. The chats will be archived for reference. Grading: Letter grades will be assigned based on a course average that is computed using the following weights: Assignment Discussion Summary For each module a case or discussion questions will be assigned to reinforce material. The questions will be discussed with your group and an individual summary of the discussion questions will be submitted. The responses will be graded as a - -, - , - +. When calculating your final grades, - + will equal 100% (high A), 4will equal 90% (low A) and - - will equal 80% (B). Two pages Percentage 25% maximum per summary, 12 font double spaced. Detailed information will be provided on WebCT. Article Critique 20% Search the library databases for articles about Quality systems or initiatives. Select an article of interest. Write a one to two page executive summary and critique. Detailed information will be provided on WebCT. Analysis of self control 20% 25% Using Juran's concept of self-control as detailed in the text book (and possibly sources from your own research), analyze a particular job. This may be your job, or the job of someone who reports to you, or it may be someone you interview (I would recommend getting company permission for this). You should have (or gain) complete and detailed knowledge of this job. Your analysis will describe how a person in that job does and does not have self-control, and how it might be improved to establish self-control. Five pages maximum. Detailed information will be provided on WebCT. Presentation 5% Prepare a slideshow presentation based on your paper with voice or notes to share with the class. Maximum 10 slides. Quality Paper Systems 25% Each student will prepare a written report that describes a company's or 30% agency's application of quality. This may be a description of the organization's quality system, or a specific quality initiative. The paper will include an analysis of the organization's quality system compared to the ideas presented in the readings. At least two sources will be required. Ten pages maximum. Detailed information will be provided on WebCT. Presentation 5% Prepare a slideshow presentation based on your paper with voice or notes to share with the class. Maximum 20 slides. The cutoff values for each grade will be made when all assignments and exam scores are recorded and the overall averages are calculated. Typically, an average of 90 or more for the course will earn an A (4.0/4.0), 80 or more a B (3.0/4.0), 70 or more a C (2.0/4.0), and 60 or more a D (1.0/4.0). For graduate classes, this is my general guideline for the grade expectations typically held for graduate classes A - Outstanding or professional quality work and excellent mastery of topics (e.g. think independently about problems, apply skills to new problems) B - Good quality work (few format errors, clear organization) and thorough mastery of topics (e.g. recognize standard problems; apply methods to problems correctly) C - Poor quality work and/or does not demonstrate a graduate level understanding of the material Below C - Significant course work missing or inadequate so as not to demonstrate a satisfactory mastery of topics Academic dishonesty: All course participants (myself, teaching assistants, and students) are expected and required to abide by the letter and the spirit of the SPSU Honor Code. If there is any way in which I can help you in complying with the honor code, please do not hesitate to ask. I will do the same. Additional guidelines for individual assignments will be explained with the assignment. If you have any questions, please ask me! Penalties for academic dishonesty can include receiving a 0 on the assignment or an F in the course. All incidents will be reported. Re-grades: Requests for re-grades must be made in writing (be specific) between 24 hours and 1 week after an assignment or exam is returned. Tentative Course Schedule: The following course schedule is tentative. Students are expected to do the reading assignment for each class period before coming to class on that day. The homework listed below typically will be handed in and discussed in class on the due date. However, homework will be accepted until 11:00 pm the...
