was Energy a major problem in the 1970's, causing two large panics in the span of a presidential term. On July 15, 1979, Jimmy Carter spoke to the American people. He said this was not as much a crisis of energy, rather a crisis or confidence in the United States. It seemed though, that as he gave his speech, he was not very confident at the microphone, at some points sounding quite drab and passionless. In reading the various statements from citizens around the country, he seemed bored and his voice was monotonous. However, there were points where Carter seemed strong and resilient that the job would be done; that the confidence of the nation would be restored. He attacks OPEC in a similar fashion. Reading the text, however, Carter seemed stronger and more upbeat in his speech. Who do you credit here; the speech writer for his superb writing or Carter for the points he made to the speech writer. Overall his speech was excellent reading from it, with very sturdy points. He left it to the individual to pull the country up by its bootstraps, not the government. He wanted the people to conserve energy by carpooling and by exercising other forms of conservation. His speech is written clearly and concisely. The only problem was he did not seem to have the passion in his voice. I'm sure he looked and felt passionate, but his voice did not seem like it to the listener. His written speech, the text, was written perfectly and there was no excuse for any American to take his points in a separate way. The text was strong and looked like that of a passionate leader. This goes to show that the different types of media truly do affect how a president is perceived. If somebody was listening on radio alone, they wouldn't be flattered, but depressed by the President's remarks. If they read the text they would be happy about the passion that Carter exhibited.
