June Name: 16, 20056:05 A5/P5 (1) Navigating the Internet: A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is the unique address which identifies a resource on the Internet for routing purposes. Know how to interpret URLs. Use a "traceroute" program such as "WhatRoute" (Mac) or Neotrace (PC) to trace the route between your computer and and a website outside of the United States. Include a screen shot showing a map and the text of the specific route taken when contacting the website. Compare your findings with those of others in the class. Are websites always located in the country in which they are registered? What does this show about the nature of Internet-based business and commerce? Compare the connection in the CSUN laboratory with your connection at home or school. What are the IP addresses of the computers you are working with? What kind of connections are your working with (dial-up, DSL, cable, 100-Base TX (twisted-pair LAN), 100-Base FX (fiber LAN), etc.)? Compare are your connection speeds. 1 Name: June 16, 20056:05 A5/P5 2 Name: June 16, 20056:05 A5/P5 Most schools have developed Acceptable Use Policies (AUP) and have installed filters to keep student focused on education. Include text (scan or download is easiest) of your school's AUP and a description of the filters in place. If a school AUP is not available, provide a sample AUP, cite its source, and provide a link. If your are not working in a school, summarize how filters work. This is the AUP policy for LAUSD, it is a long document so I made a link to it. LAUSD AUP policy. Working in the computer lab for a school semester at the elementary school I worked it I know there were only certain educational websites that students could go on. No one was able to check their personal e-mail except for the school district e-mail account that is given to all employees. The computers were restricted to sites and software for school purposes only. (2) Knowing your School: Teachers should have a good understanding of their school, students, and the communities they represent. Much statistical data can be gained using online resources. *TPE-tip You may wish to develop a case study of your school using this and you personal observations to meet TPE 8. Develop a written profile of your school and students. Your profile should include the following: 3 Name: June 16, 20056:05 A5/P5 School distinctive : Study your school website and discuss school history, distinctive and goals. Geography: Describe your campus and its community using satellite photos and maps. Using the photos, describe the nature of the community (commercial, apartments, single family homes, industry, etc.) Socioeconomic status: Include maps showing the socioeconomic status (SES) of the communities contributing students to your school. Discuss two or more prominent SES characteristics of the school population. School performance: Include test scores and the Academic Performance Index of your school. Discuss the academic climate of your school, including test scores, API, change in scores, dropout rate, English learners, students requiring special education, etc. Hamlin Elementary Profile API 860 rise in score every year15% from last year. (California Distinguished School) School Demographics African American 11% English Language Learners 24% Asian 7% Students w/Disabilities 5% Hispanic 45% Gifted 14% White 32% Other 5% SES Free or reduced lunch 58% (Title 1 school) Parent education (86% answered) 14% not high school graduates 22% high school graduates 27% some college 25% college graduate 13% grad school This school is in a highly influent area, located in the heart of West Hills, where many parents work for the entertainment industry. The have several special education classes ranging from PreK-5th and they have a speech therapist, occupational therapist, literacy coach, math coach and gifted program at the school. In the last year the school has been able to obtain several grants for student programs, ranging from art, theater, and dance classes for all students, also this year they have a hired physical education teacher that teaches PE to all the students (instead of school staff doing it like in previous years). The school has been increasing their API score every year and last year it went up 15% to 860, although enrollment is low, due to the competing magnet schools in the area that parents rather have their children enrolled in. The city of West Hills has many commercial outlets for residents and students. There is a local public library walking distance from the school where students take a field trip during the year to learn about the special reading programs conducted during the summer. Another company PETCO, where students also take a field trip every year (walking distance as well) students learn 4 Name: June 16, 20056:05 A5/P5 about different animals and how to take care of pets. There are several malls in the area included Northridge Mall, Topanga Canyon, Warner Center and the Westerfield Topanga Mall. (3) College Advisement: Secondary teachers often have the opportunity to advise students on decisions pertaining to college. In many environments, teachers are the only individuals students know who have been to college. Describe a real or hypothetical student (interests, family SES, personality) who is interested in pursuing a career in a field related to what you teach. Recommend a major and 4-year college and explain the rationale for your recommendation using information found on college websites. Provide active links to the colleges, and quote relevant information. This student is a young high school girl, is the daughter of two immigrant parents from El Salvador, who are a working class family. Both parents work but have not gone to college but graduated high school. Parents have other children which are also attending state colleges and have athletic scholarships. This particular students is looking to go to a university to study Physical Science with an emphasis on the earth system and is very interested in Astronomy. She is a very good student with a 3.5 GPA and received 1200 on her SAT. The family man concern is paying for school. The university I suggested for this student is the University of Irvine 5 Name: June 16, 20056:05 A5/P5 majoring in Earth System Science. The undergraduate cost for 9 months = 17423 or school academic year 8275.50. There is a special PACE program where the fees are spread out in 3 months so students can make three separate payments dividing. I choose this university for this students because the student would be getting a university level education without paying the large cost of one of the bigger universities like, UCLA, USC or Berkley. Provide a paragraph of advice to the parents of this student regarding financing college. Consider their financial and family situation. There are great opportunities for the family to get financial help to pay for college. The students will first fill out a FASA form, application for financial aid, the school offers many scholarships and grants can also be obtained. I would not recommend taking out a student loan for this student, because there is limited forgiveness loan programs for people in this major. I will suggest that the student apply for the following grants and scholarships: *Financial Aid *The Mabel Wilson Richards Scholarship Fund $1,000 for female students in financial need, with a 3.0 GPA, lives in the area. * Stanly Behren Scholarship $5000 *Hispanic College Fund/NASA pays for of tuition and fees (not more than 10,000) * Regent's scholarship awarded to newly admitted freshmans to the university that show a financial need, and is based on high academic performance. Some of the sites that the parents can look at for more scholarship from opportunities outside resources are: collegeboard. com www.collegeboard.com/pay fastweb www.fastweb.com finaid www.finaid.org college toolkit www.collegetoolkit.com/scholarship/Main.aspx The university website has opportunities for parents to take a virtual tourhttp://www.uci.edu/virtualtour/index.html. There is a lot of information for students and parents on the website some of the features for new students includes, student jobs and internship link that helps students with their resumes, interviewing skills, job fairs and job listing. Important information for students: Admission dates for Fall semester starts in March. House applications in May average cost is $400 a month. (4) Professional Growth: Teachers should model "life-long learning" by attending workshops, reading journals, and participating in professional organizations.*TPE-tip You may wish to research professional organizations and employment opportunities and 6 Name: June 16, 20056:05 A5/P5 include plans for professional involvement and career development as part of your Individual Induction Plan required for TPE 13. Describe a professional conference (related to your field) you may benefit from attending. Describe the purpose and scope of the professional organization sponsoring the conference and provide a synopsis of the conference and one or more selected workshops or presentations you would like to attend. Include a link to the professional organization and to the specific conference. 1I am a member of the NSTA, the National Science Teachers Association and I would like to attend their annual national conference that is held in three areas of the country. I am interested in the conference that is coming to Portland, OR in the month of November. This is an opportunity for teachers to get together to attend workshops, collaborate and interact with other educations and peer in the field of teaching science. Not only is there workshop for professional development that focuses on science education, but there is an exhibition of science materials. This years focus in on the power of being green, and integrating other subject matters like, reading and writing into science. I am particular interested in the focus on the "Power of Being Green: Educating for a Sustainable World. Organization site http://www.nsta.org/ Workshop site http://www.nsta.org/conferences/2008por/ (5) Employment: Most schools and districts advertise job openings on the Internet. Teachers should use such resources not only to find employment for themselves, but also to attract others to their schools and thus build strong departments. Find a job announcement for a teaching position for which you are qualified. Include a screen capture of the advertisement. Describe the school and community using information found on the Internet. Cite your resources. David Star Jordan Middle School is my old middle school and based on the information on the school website this school seems to be a very good place to work. The school provides various programs that are very beneficial to students, parents and teachers. This includes afterschool programs for students offered from 3-5pm weekly, SDAIE program for English Language Learners conducted by highly trained teachers in using vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension of the English language while still following content standards, there is a Gate program for gifted students, and for parents there are opportunities to volunteer, join the PTA, parent orientation and classes. Teachers can benefit from professional development workshops, and seminars and the school has an API score of 792 and is a California Distinguished School. The community of Burbank is known for being the Media Capital of the world, where various studios have established their companies there like, Disney Studios, Warner Brothers Studios, NBC studios, Cartoon Network, Yahoo, and Nickelodeon. The cities has its own airport and is only about 12 miles from 7 Name: June 16, 20056:05 A5/P5 downtown Los Angeles, it is nestled in the heart of the valley and is no more than 15 miles from many metropolitan areas like, Santa Monica, Hollywood, Los Angeles, and Pasadena. The population of the city of Burbank is about 100,316 and is mainly made up of white and Hispanic residents. According to the crime index report from the Burbank Police Department website crime has decreased considerably for the last several years, they also claim that "Burbank is an extremely safe city in which to live, work and play." http://www.ci.burbank.ca.us/police/ http://www.burbank.k12.ca.us/ http://www.burbankchamber.org/ (6) Multi-media resources: Numerou...
