Dan Barr, From: Sent: To: Subject: Squire, James Wednesday, May 03, 2000 14:58 Smith, Todd; Barr, Dan Statement of Work Greetings! Thank you so much for expressing an interest in designing a project for the Science Museum of Virginia's Gallery Education department to use in our new telecommunications wing. I would like to suggest that your team draw up the ideas as you see them actually working and send them to me via email or regular mail so we are both starting from the same page. (Although we went through some of these ideas on the phone, I know that having a hard copy of the tentative plans would certainly help keep me clarify what your ideas are!) I am looking at the end of December 2000 for the "due date" when the project would be expected at the museum. And of course, the due date would include any material in support of the display (a write-up explaining operation and educational concepts so that our team can effectively and correctly interpret the display). As we discussed, the materials for the project should cost under $200. We spoke about a device that takes a signal source from a CD or radio and converts it into a digital signal that is then sent over several operating lasers in parallel (is 8 enough to hear a nice sound?), is then received and converted back into something the guests can hear. To make it interactive, we want to make it possible to block some of the channels and hear the degradation. The general idea is that it must be appealing to the senses: visual, tactile (interactive), audible, and allow guests to concretely explore some pretty complex ideas. The device will have a "facilitator" around it to help guide guests and explain what they are seeing/doing, and prevent mischief. I would like to invite your team to visit the museum this fall to gain some insight into our museum and the different ways we interact with our guests. I can al...
