United The States is celebrating National Fishing week June 4-10th this year. Over 60 million people fished last year, or about 32 percent of all Americans. In total, these people spent over one billion days fishing. Most fishing occurs in freshwater, about 84 percent, while the remaining 16 percent occurs in saltwater. About 1 /3 of all fishing in the United States is for black bass. After bass, the most popular species include panfish, catfish, crappie, trout, walleye and northern pike. And, of course, in this area musky fishing is at the top of the list. Fishi ng is one of America's great leisure activity among men and fifth among women. That's why we celebrate National Fishing Week each year. We are honored to have General Chuck Yeager serving a second year as Chairman of National Fishing Week. I n addition to National Fishing Week there are a wide range of programs around the country associated with recreational fishing. For example, 34 states will offer one or more free fishing days in 1990. No fishing license will be required here in Wisconsin on June 3. The purpose of the free day is to provide people an opportunity to experience the pleasures of fishing.

MIKE DOMBECK grew up in the Moose Lake area, attended Hayward schools, UW-Stevens Point, University of Minnesota, and received his doctorate from Iowa State University in fisheries biology and animal ecology. Mike has worked as an area fishing guide, taught in public schools and universities, and served with the U.S. Forest Service, most recently as the national fisheries program manager in Washington, D.C. Now he has been named special assistant to the Director of the Bureau of Land Management as an adviser on wildlife and fisheries issues on BLM's 270 million acres of land.

One of my most satisfying activities over the past several years is being a member of the National Fishing Week Steering Committee. While the world is overwhelmed with a variety of issues such as drugs, acid rain, global warming - only to mention a few it's important to take time to go fishing. Recreational fishing is a sport that can be enjoyed by the disabled, the rich or poor, and the young or old. It is an activity that is good for the mind, body, and soul. And it teaches leasons in patience and perseverance, good sportsmanship and ethics, ecology and conservation. And it may even yield a healthy meal. So this year "TAKE A FRIEND FISHING."
