While service towers used pre-cast parts, the main building is constructed of predominately cast in place concrete. Floors are a grid of concrete beams, not a coffered slab, and are supported by reinforced concrete columns on a 10.8m x 18m grid `the Room' Lloyd's functions as a society of underwriters formed into syndicates. These syndicates function through communication and interaction. In order to maintain its efficiency, Lloyds required a single market place under one roof, this is known as `the Room'.
