Readiness Project Package P07310 ES MT for Polaris ATV) Rev 5-Jun-09 INTRODUCTION: This document describes and serves as a template for preparation of a Project Readiness Package. The objective of the Project Readiness Package is to document customer needs and expectations, project deliverables (including time frame), budget, and personnel / organizations affiliated with the project. It will serve as the primary source of information for students necessary during Phase 0 (Planning) to develop a SD I plan and schedule including specific deliverables and due dates. The Project Readiness Package will also support Faculty evaluation of project suitability in terms of depth, scope, and student / faculty resources by discipline. In this document, italicized text provides explanatory information regarding the desired content of the sections indicated by nonitalicized, bold, capitalized headings. If a particular aspect of a section is not applicable for a given project, it is only necessary to indicate that by entering N/A (not applicable). ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION: Information regarding contacts, budgets, facilities, resources, regulatory or legal considerations, proprietary or specialized components, technologies or intellectual property associated with the project. Proposal Number: 1 Project Name: Electronically Shifting Manual Transmission for Polaris ATV Project Number: P07310 Track: Systems and Controls Start Term: Winter 2006-2 End Term: Spring 2006-3 Faculty Consultants: Electrical, Industrial and Mechanical Engineering Faculty. Faculty Guide: Prof. George Slack (gbseee@rit.edu) 475-5105 Customer organization and primary contact (name, phone, e-mail): Joel Notaro Polaris Industries Performance ATV Project Engineer joel.notaro@polarisind.com www.polarisindustries.com 651-408-7580 Project Overview (1 Paragraph that provides a general description of the project in terms of background, motivation(s), customer(s), and overall objective(s).): The concept of developing a highly efficient, electronically shifting manual transmission based on a current engine platform is very intriguing to Polaris. Manual shift transmissions are inherently more efficient than automatic transmissions. Automatic transmissions are desirable because of ease of use especially in challenging off road terrain. Formula 1 cars have been using `paddle' shifters for many years and many auto makers are adopting variations of this design. The Yamaha FJR1300 motorcycle features an automated manual 5-speed gearbox with a clutch controller and electronic shift actuator all mated to a control module providing for `clutchless manual operation. 5-Jun-09 Page 1 of 5 Project Readiness Package P07310 ES MT for Polaris ATV) Rev 5-Jun-09 Staffing Requirements: Discipline (number) Skills required (concise) Jointly define shift characteristics. Device timing and hysteresis characteristics ME, All between clutch and throttle dynamics and shift points. Determine if other input ISE, EE engine sensors are needed. Define transmission device force and power needs (i.e. solenoid, actuator, motor) ME 2 between the transmission and power electronics. Shift forces for associated engine dynamics Modify current Polaris engine case to house these devices. ISE 1 Patent searches, manufacturability, safety and reliability. Controls for clutch, throttle and shift points. Integrate sensors into shift and clutch EE 2 algorithms. Continuation, Platform, or Building Block project information (Include prior project number and title and to what extent previous results are being incorporated): N/A. Principle sponsor or sponsoring organization: POLARIS DETAILED PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Customer needs: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Research existing electronically shifting manual transmissions including patent submissions Develop a plan to incorporate electronic shift control onto a Polaris Outlaw 525 Install and test the system on a Polaris Outlaw 525 The first step would be to use push-buttons or paddles for up and down shifting The stretch goal would be to design the control system enabling up and down shifting without user input Minimize engine case changes System should be able to endure harsh environmental conditions mud, water, vibration, heat, etc. System production cost should be computed based on 5000 vehicle annual production System weight should be less than 7 pounds Customer and Sponsor Involvement (Describe role of customer and sponsor in the project, planned participation in design and project reviews, etc.): Periodic updates on progress. Further refinement during first meeting with Sponsor. 5-Jun-09 Page 2 of 5 Project Readiness Package P07310 ES MT for Polaris ATV) Rev 5-Jun-09 Regulatory requirements (i.e. UL, IEEE, FDA, FCC, RIT): ATV agency standards and/ or constraints. TBD. Project Budget and Special Procurement Processes (Provide all budget details and processes associated with expenditures): A Polaris Outlaw 525 will be submitted to the team for 6 months. Location is TBD. CIMs blding? Baja lab? Polaris will cover all of the team's material expenses incurred on this project. Intellectual property (IP) considerations (Describe any IP concerns or limitations associated with the project): Potential IP's will be the property of the Polaris. Other (Describe potential benefits and liabilities, known project risks, etc.): All design drawings and prototype project will be the of property Polaris. DETAILED COURSE DELIVERABLES: From the Course Deliverables document, extract general and discipline specific deliverables that are appropriate to the project. This should provide clear guidance to the students on what it expected. As per https://edge.rit.edu/content/Senior%20Design%20I/public/Course%20Deliverables . If remote access by Sponsor is required, please contact George Slack at 475-5105 or gbseee@rit.edu. PRELIMINARY WORK BREAKDOWN: Describe the anticipated distribution of general tasks to be accomplished by project participants based on perceived skill set requirements. This should justify the requested skills and number of students from each discipline. See Staffing Requirements. The Senior Design Team will propose a work breakdown structure and communicate this to the Sponsor and RIT Faculty for review. GRADING AND ASSESSMENT SCHEME: Describe how the grading rubric relates to expectations and deliverables. The impact of project enhancements and improvements from baseline should be clearly articulated. For general guidelines, see https://edge.rit.edu/content/Senior%20Design%20I/public/Grading. Grading will be as indicated on the standard grade form. Additional graded deliverables specific to this project include a complete Product Manual. These will be included in the Deliverables category for SDII. SD I Average expectations ( C ) System functional specifications, software and hardware engineering specifications, software and hardware architecture development, proposed selection of hardware and software development materials and tools, completed test and verification document. Above average expectations ( B ) Use push-buttons or paddles for up and down shifting. Average expectations control software and hardware designs (flowcharts, software specifications, CAD drawings, schematics) feasibility assessment documenting the optimal design based sound engineering and prototype empirical data and power/lifetime estimates, baseline software that demonstrates interaction with sensors and devices, completed bill of materials suitable for ordering necessary development materials and tools. Excellent ( A ) The stretch goal would be to design the control system enabling up and down shifting without user input. Above average expectations plus demonstration of quality features and functions not listed in this document. Functions will be integrated to be sufficiently flexible to monitor for future use. SD II 5-Jun-09 Page 3 of 5 Project Readiness Package P07310 ES MT for Polaris ATV) Rev 5-Jun-09 Average expectations ( C ) Prototype system that meets functional requirements according to relevant test specifications that demonstrates proof of concept.
