Reconstruction - Edwin Stanton - Ku Klux Klan Westward Expansion - Homestead Act - Las Gorras Blancas Quiz on the 24th over Chapter 21. Civil War - Causes: o States rights o Individual states were afraid of the government o Slavery o Westward Expansion o Representation of Government - John Brown - Robert E. Lee against succession - Ft. Sumptor- first attack in civil war April 1865 - Lincoln Election o Once elected, planned to abolish slavery which upset the South. o Emancipation proclamation more or less a PR stunt. Didn't actually free anyone. - Death Toll over 600,000 Reconstruction - To unify the states so they can be one. - Reunite the confederate states back into the union Lincoln's plan for reconstruction: - 10% plan 10% of state population had to take an oath of loyalty to the U.S. - End the war quickly and gain widespread support. - Take a tougher stance towards the south Wade-Davis plan: - Calls for a 50% oath of allegiance to U.S. Andrew Johnson - Lincoln Successor. - Very racist - Tried to veto first reconstruction act which would require states to rewrite state constitutions to add African American voting rights. - Tried to veto Civil Rights act of 1866 but was overridden - Argues with Congress a lot over acts. Later attempted impeachment by congress in February of 1868 for breaking federal laws (tenure act). Impeachment trial took 3 months to see if they had reason to impeach. Needed 2/3 vote. Senate didn't get 2/3 vote so didn't pass, not impeached. - Began blocking military leaders in beginning reconstruction Fires Secretary of War Edwin Stanton which violates tenure of office act. Stanton then barricaded himself into his office and refused to leave. Stayed in office close to 2 months. Lorenzo Thomas was his successor. Tenure of Office Act 1867 - Denied Johnson the authority to fire federal office holders. Commanding the Army Act 1867 - Also denies Johnson authority to interfere Ku Klux Klan - Founded in Pulaski, TN in 1866 by confederate soldiers. - Adopted elaborate rituals and costumes - Wanted to appear like ghosts to scare African Americans - Put up posters to send warning to blacks they were there and make their presence known - Attack homes of blacks and also those of whites who supported republican party - Targeted landowners who were black. - Attacked teachers who accepts black students - State governments made own militias to fight KKK - Southerners overall objected to KKK ways - Nathan Bedford Fords famous KKK grand wizard. - In 1871 government passes KKK act. Outlawed any conspiracy that deprived citizens of their constitutional rights (rights to vote, hold office, serve on jury, etc.) o Authorized the use of the Federal Military against KKK o Gave the government the right to suspend Habeas Corpus (speedy trial) o Government very aggressive in fighting KKK Difficult to reconstruct south because: - Northern indifference - Politicians more interested in currency, tariffs, etc. and not reconstruction in the South - 1876 Republican party completely abandoned reconstruction during election - 1877 official reconstruction. Last of federal troops evacuated from the South. Westward Expansion Charles Windolph - Soldier in frontier army - June 1876 battalion assaulted Indian village - Indians responded to attack soldiers, but turned back before reaching Windolph. - Recorded his observations of the Indians celebrating and dancing. - Supposedly no dancing or celebrating. Too many people in mourning in grief. - Last survivor of Little Big Horn Where does the West begin? - Trans Mississippi West. - Scholars believe west of the 98th meridian separates humid plans of east and dry plains of the west.
